Question about Gas Operated Rifle??

Post by Onefish »

Hey guys. I am new here and I live in Northern VA. I had a question, I hope you can answer. I am looking to buy the Beretta JXP21300 and in the information under Action: it says Gas Operation. What does that mean? The other rifles I am looking at say Striker Fire Action or Semi Automatic. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

The gun does not require you to add any gas to operate. Gas operation is how the action is cycled. Some of the gas from the burning gunpowder goes from the barrel back to the bolt to move it back, which extracts the empty casing. A spring will then push the bolt forward, loading the next round. The trigger is also reset during this cycle. Many (most?) semi-automatic rifles and shotguns are gas operated. There are some gas operated pistols, but this is pretty rare. This should be transparent to the user: pull the trigger, gun goes bang, and a new round is loaded.

Striker fired refers to the firing mechanism of pistols. It is a little different than the more traditional firing pin and hammer. Neither is better or worse - they are just different. To the novice, this should also be transparent: pull the trigger, and gun goes boom. More experienced shooters can debate the pros and cons of striker fired guns and will notice things like different trigger pulls vs SA/DA action. Striker-fired is usually only applied to pistols.

The JXP21300 is a strike fire pistol that uses gas blow-back to cycle the auto loader.

The "strike fire" describes a system that either has a hidden hammer (rare) or no hammer but has a spring loaded release firing pin (technically correct and most common) to fire the round.

Gas operated means that it relies on the weapon firing and creating energy to load the next round. When a round is fired, as the bullet travels up the barrel, the burning gases expand in all directions. However, the only tow opening to escape from are at the front or rear of the barrel. As some gas blows the bullet out the barrel, some gas also blows out the back of the barrel (or occasionally out a special port) and that gas pressure moves the loading system.
