I've never shot a pistol from a bench rest of any sort. I don't even think I've shot a pistol from a sitting position.

I see gun tests with results of shot groups at 1.5-2.0 at 25 yards. That is incredible to me. Are these for real? They are from a bench rest but what does that mean? Is this just a person holding the test gun with open sites (no laser), a scope? or possibly just supported with a wadded up towel?

I've hit the center of two pieces of duct tape at 25 yards but consider it a fluke or luck. Yes, I was aiming and told my son "watch this..." and did it...but still luck.

It these are for real I'll never be a competitor on a range or am I missing something?

What's your best (real) story?

Hey bruce, I am not a competitive shooter either. I don't have any reliable results beyond the kind of screwing around that could be attributed to luck, as with your experience.

I do go to Range82 fairly frequently. There are several competitive shooters that train there. One husband and wife team sticks out, only because the wife was the IDPA world champ a few years back.

Anyway, I have seen the guy regularly shoot standing with a red dot and land groups at 10-15 yards that are so tight that you would swear that he missed until you walk up to the target and see the rounds just hit the same spot.

I have seen other guys there shooting from the 50 and 100 with tables, shot bags, red dots, scopes, etc. They make tighter groups from 50 yards than I can with my scoped rifle while prone at the 100.

Last I read, the world record with a .45 ACP was set by Karl Lippard with open sights, seated at a table with shoot bags... 8 out of 10 shots on a 36" bullseye at 600 yards. That is 6 MOA with open sights on a 45. I got to believe that at 25 or 100, you can see the target better and can produce better results.

A top level bullseye pistol shooter can consistently shoot sub 4.5 inch groups at 50 yards when shooting one-handed slow fire. The guns themselves can shoot sub 3 inch groups from a rest at 50 yards.

I can shoot 5 or 6 inch groups at 25 yards using both hands, on a good day.
