Moving to Nelson County

Hi folks,

Yesterday, the wife and I made an offer on a home in Nellysford and it looks like we'll be moving in the Spring!

Background: I've been a lurker for sometime as I have a non-resident CHP but figured it was finally time to make an introduction! I'm a native Marylander and have lived in MD all of my life. It's bittersweet, but over the last few years (2013 in particular), I've decided that enough is enough, and have been looking at making a permanent the jump across the river - I work and travel all throughout VA nearly everyday anyway so it was going to happen eventually...

I've got a number of questions, but the 2 most important ones are:

1) I've heard that some counties are more gun friendly than others with respect to issuing CHP's. Obviously, I'll need to convert my non-resident to a resident permit. Anyone have any specific insights into Nelson County?

2) Ranges. I'm familiar with Rivanna, but is there anything closer to me? I've searched, but didn't come up with much. Looks like maybe there's a trap-oriented range near Stanton? I'm hoping there are more local options...

Thanks, and look forward to joining you in the Old Dominion!

I'm not too familiar with Nelson County, but in general, if you get away from the population centers or northern VA, Richmond, and Norfolk, and the liberal college town of Charlottesville, you'll probably be in a gun-friendly region. On the positive side, the law in Virginia for getting a permit is fairly strong and goes a long way towards preventing abuse from local authorities, so you should not have a problem.

Welcome to VA! :welcome:

Welcome! Refugees from the Socialist People's Republics make good Virginians.

I think you're about equally far from either RRPC or Izaak Walton Lynchburg in Amherst. Of the two, you will find Rivanna to be more active in all the shooting disciplines, and the indoor range is a great advantage. IWL does have a beautiful 300-yard rifle range that I envy.

Hite Hollow is a heck of a long drive from Nellysford.

Glad to see you followed up and are actually coming in. Rivanna members' meetings are the 2nd Thursday evening of each month. The cookout starts at 6:30 and the meeting starts at 7:30.
