CHP Wait Time In Wise County

Post by OleMan »

Does anyone have experience or know of the wait time to get a CHP issued in Wise County. I have a relative who has an application in process and has been told to expect a long wait - like 'six weeks' for the court to issue it.

Thanks.

Mine is issued by Wise County. The Clerk, Mr. J. Jack Kennedy, is not at all disposed against issuing CHPs. In fact, he sends out letters to remind CHP holders of upcoming expirations so they don't forget to renew. I didn't pay any attention to how long it took to get mine, but that goes back to when they first began to issue them. If Jack has a long wait, it must be because his staff is overloaded or there is some other factor outside his control; because I assure you it is not by design. Even if jack were not a proponent of CHPs, obstructionism on CHPs in Wise County would be very likely to get a Clerk unelected.

Think I'll send him an e-mail and ask.

Thanks very much. If you are able to get a response from the Clerk, I would appreciate knowing what he says. The reminder on renewals sounds downright friendly.

I spent several days in Wise County this past summer and I like the area.

Thanks again.

Jack's Relpy:

"Thank you. The wait time is generally three weeks. It can be up to six, it just depends on the backlog at the Sheriff's office. Rarely does six weeks; and if it does, I issue the concealed permit. I am keenly aware of the process time concerns. I don't know who told them six weeks, but they should not have said that as it would most certainly be the exception and not the rule. This sounds like misinformation. Nonetheless, I am checking. Thank you for pointing it out to me. We don't want a bad reputation."

'Bout what I figured. Mr. Kennedy does an outstanding job; and in spite of the fact that he's a democrat, he's an all-round good feller. You just can't trust him to pick POTUSes or Governors, that's all.

Dormin

I appreciate your checking on this. It could be of great help to my relative who has a more immediate need, so I forwarded the Clerk's reply to him. I'm sure that one or two of the committee of officials for whom he works could discuss it constructively with the Clerk and/or Sheriff.

I wasn't told who said 'six weeks' was the wait time, but maybe they just took the 45 day shall issue period as a required time, and I don't know it was the Clerk's office. Perhaps someone could have said 'up to six weeks' and my brain was not keeping up with my hearing aids.

I really like the approach of the Clerk to serving and informing constituents - a real local official in the true American tradition. I noted on the Clerk's website that they have had record numbers of applications in 2013 and part of 2014.

Thanks very much.
