Looking for a place to shoot, very specific.

I've got a handgun and a Mosin, and I'm looking for a place to shoot both at the same time or at least my handgun.

I currently use the Amelia Wildlife Management Area to shoot my Mosin, and all it cost was a fishing permit which was very cheap.

I currently don't shoot my handgun anywhere since there are only 2 places withing 20 miles of me.
Dominion Range doesn't allow me to bring my own ammo, which is stupid as poop.
Colonial Shooting Academy cost $35 a month, something I can't afford to spend since I'm a student.

Is there somewhere within like 30 minutes of me that I can shoot my handgun and not pay an arm and a leg for? I don't mind paying a range fee, but I want to use my own ammo I'm in 23112 area of Hull Street, near the Swift Creek Reservoir to give you some perspective.

-Thanks

Am I the only person on this forum that didn't know where Swift Creek Reservoir is in the state of Virginia? Of course, I did assume that it's IN Virginia.

The link above is the best list I have seen. Around the Richmond area, check into:
Black Creek - if I recall correctly it is a for fee membership deal and one has to apply on an annual basis.
Charles City - Chickahomininy WMA
Charles City - Virginia Conservation Park (formerly an Isaac Walton range). I checked into it many years ago and it seemed pricey unless one did a lot of shooting and frequently. It is private membership. If I remember correctly, you can call, be asked to come to the range or to a meeting, meet some members and get invited to join if they are not oversubscribed. My son went there as a guest many years ago and he liked it.
Hopewell - Fort Lee Range - I think there is a .22 caliber limit on rifles. Military activities, such as training, take precedence. I heard from someone who went there a few times that it is well organized, in good condition and is safe.

I think all of these might be slightly more than 30 minutes from the Midlothian area, but likely under an hour.

Good luck. Oleman

I don't think one has to live a long ways from the area to not know where Swift Creek Reservoir is located.

The Smoking Gun I believe it's called is a handgun only range, very friendly, reasonable pricing. They have in the past allowed us to bring our own ammo, but also do have it for sale. Might be worth a look, while not the prettiest place, it's functional, and the owner has been very decent.

Black Creek - Really seems like the best bet, if the price isn't expensive. I'll have to call them and figure out the range prices as they don't have a website.
Charles City - Chickahomininy WMA - Same as the Amelia WMA which I already use.
Charles City - Virginia Conservation Park - Land looks nice, but damn, the prices are high. The initiation fee is $500; annual membership dues are $200.
I do see that they have a "Fun Shoot Dates" with some upcoming in Nov and Dec. Do those cost or only available to members?
Hopewell - Fort Lee Range - I've been thinking about going to Fort Lee in the past just for my handgun, and it really seems like the best bet. Only problem is they don't allow Mosins as its above their 5.56 max policy, so my brother won't be able to shoot with me.

Thanks for the places, I'll probably visit either Fort Lee or Black Creek if I can get pricing down.

Nothing about TheSmokingGun floats my boat, I'm sorry for being so fastidious. I do like how they allow you to use your own ammo, but the prices are extremely high. $20.00 for the lane, for one hour of range time and if you bring more than 1 gun then you have to buy as many lanes per guns. That's price gouging at it's finest.

I am a member at Black Creek and think it is a pretty nice private range. I don't remember off the top of my head what the annual fee is but it is under $150 for a year membership. It's a bring your own ammo range with a dedicated pistol only range plus 25, 50, and 100 yard ranges. They only do memberships once a year in January.

In Jan I'll have to look into that. Do you know if they allow Mosins? Also do any guest passes come with that membership? $150 for 12 months is a good price even I go out once a month.

340 Defense is just over the line from Berryville. Relaxed setting and nice people. There's a 400m lane for those who can shoot MOA on the 100.

I shoot my AR, and 30-30 there so I don't know why they would have an issue with Mosins. Members can bring guests for I think $5 a visit

Hey Zues,

You don't have to pay $35 a month to shoot at Colonial. They have an hourly rate for non memebers.
