Virginia Gun Owners Forum - VGOF

Hello Everyone,
I am new to the forum and new to Charlottesville, VA. I am now a resident of Virginia and I want to apply for a CCW. I have taken an online training course (http://www.vaguntraining.com/) which states that is recognized by the state. I passed the test and received my certificate which I have printed. I have also began filling out the form found here http://www.vsp.state.va.us/downloads/SP ... 1-2013.pdf. I have a few questions regarding my application.

1) When I got my VA Drivers license I was told that I live just outside the Charlottesville city limits and that I actually reside in Albemarle county. When I fill out my SP-248 application, the bottom of the first page asks STATE OF ________ , _ City _ County ___________ . WouldI fill this in as STATE OF VIRGINIA, _ City X County Albemarle.

2) Because I do reside in Albemarle county and just outside the city limits, which court would I take this application to?

3) On the state site here: http://www.vsp.state.va.us/Firearms_Res ... dgunPermit it states that the maximum fees I could have to pay add up to $50.00. How much does it actually cost when applying? Should I just write a check for $50.00?

On a different note. I have been looking for some places to practice shooting. All I can find is the Rivanna Rifle and Pistol Club. Any other options that are more open to the public?

None that I know of which is why I joined the RRPC.
Unless you can befriend someone that has enough land to shoot on you're pretty much out of luck.
If you haven't been out there and want to see the place PM me and I'll take you out as a guest.
Well over 100 acres (some of it wetlands that can't be improved so makes a good buffer zone) and ranges for nearly anything. One 300 yard lane.

What a helpful bunch of folks.

I just submitted my CHP application thanks to the help of the guys on here.

I am definitely interested in checking out RRPC. I need to read a little more about the membership rules but it seems like a good place to practice shooting. I will PM you if that's alright.

You may not need this info now, but when I got my CWP it was a very simple and inexpensive process. I also took an online class through 11BravoTraining New Castle, Va.

Made a trip to the County Clerk's office with the completed form I obtained online and the class certificate. I paid the $15.00, they did a background check while I waited (about 10 minutes). The clerk indicated the approving sheriff was out (it was a Friday) and they would call next week. Got the call Tuesday went back took the oath and they laminated my card and off I went. Great process.

There is a range in Warrenton and also one in Harrisonburg that are public. The Warrenton one is called Clark Brothers and its about and hour and 20 minutes from Sams club in Charlottesville. Just take 29 North and they are on the left hand side as you pass the Sheetz in Opal on the right. It's decent but can get pretty crowded. You have to buy your ammo from them and no rapid firing. There is also a free public range for rifle's at the Wildlife Management Area just past Culpeper. It has target stands at 25,50 an 100 yards but is long gun's only and is really crowded on the weekends. It's the Phelps WMA look it up on google for directions, it's probably the same time to get there but it's free and you can use your ammo. They have 5 or 6 covered lanes if I remember right and 1 is reserved for the handicapped. Hope this helps. I have heard Rivanna Rifle and Pistol Club is awesome but I haven't been there yet, my buddy is a member and he is going to take me once he gets back from a deployment.

So I applied for my permit on September 26, 2014. I still have not received any information on my application. the state site says it's a maximum of 45 days, does that include weekends?

Call the clerk and pose your question there. They can best answer your questions.
Please let us know what they say so we can determine if they are within Virginia CHP laws.

pro shooter is just pointing out the poor quality of video instruction vs live instructor who can answer all your questions or point you in the right direction.

Haha I know, I saw that he is an instructor himself so I understand the frustration for him losing a lot of business to online courses. The online course for me was a method of expediting the process of getting my license. There are YouTube videos which go into much greater detail for free but they don't give you a certificate of course. I just wanted to poke fun at him for not helping when he clearly has an answer.

I was planning on taking an in person course when I had the time.

BTW I called the county clerks office and they said that they could not reach the number on the application. Which is odd because I have the same phone number. It had been sitting there for over a month waiting for pickup... oh well

To answer your question, the 45 calendar days includes weekends, holidays, etc.

I'm not so much upset about losing business to online classes. We were actually the first ones to consider online classes, but I couldn't justify putting my name and reputation on a certificate for someone that I never laid eyes on. I could have an online course on my website tomorrow if I wanted to. The online class is all about making money, and while money is important to me, the training is just as important.

The real problem is that most (all?) of these certificates are being issued fraudulently. I believe that one day soon, all of the folks who did the online thing will have their permits revoked by the courts and they'll then have to take a live course.

Why? The law says these courses are acceptable. Some instructors who are issuing certificates for online training and signing them with their NRA instructor credentials may be in violation of NRA training policy, but they are operating within the law. Should the NRA revoke their instructor status, pretty sure this would not be a retroactive revocation and therefore not affect past training.
