I’m looking for a survival rifle that won’t take up much space. Don't know when I'll finally get around to buying one, but there are three that I’m considering:

Henry US Survival Rifle
Marlin Papoose
Ruger 10/22 CRR Compact with a folding stock by Choate or Ram-Line

I know where I’m leaning, but I’d like some other opinions especially if you own (or have owned) any of these. If you have suggestions for other survival rifles, let me know what you think of them too.

IMO you just cant beat the Ruger 10/22. And Ruger does make fine rifles. You can also get aftermarket 20/30 round mags for them. Its also a great plinker for a day at the range or hunting down tree rats.

I had the same question - in my research, I was looking at the Marlin - breaks down small and very light-weight, and better reliability than the Henry - I've heard reports of the Henry jamming and stovepiping frequently... I know the Rugers are great quality, but the break-down of the Marlin makes it super-small to throw in a pack, etc... Anyone have one of the Marlins?

Yep, you're right. I have a regular size 10/22, and it's great, so I really don't need just another plinker. I'm looking for a 22LR that will breakdown or fold-up into a small package that I can use for backpacking, camping, canoe trips, or just keep in the back of my vehicle for who knows what.

Ruger makes a compact (CRR) version of the 10/22 with a barrel just over 16" long. I figure if I put a folding stock on that, it could be packed into pretty small place. Has anyone used the 10/22 CRR? Even better, a 10/22 CRR with a folding stock?

Thanks, I've read about the US Survival Rifle jamming problems on various message boards too. But . . . most of the complaints seem to come from folks who have one that was made by Charter Arms.

People who have the original AR-7 commercial models by Armalite seem pretty happy as do those who have bought one since Henry took over production from Charter. Also, even with the Charter models, there is supposed to be an easy fix to the jamming ("The chamber needs a very slight chamfer on the receiving end so the bullet does not hang up while being fed from the magazine on the sharp corner"). Some also say most of the jamming is eliminated by using high velocity rounds, and that no jamming occurs when using CCI Stingers.

That said, it looks there's general agreement that although the Marlin Papoose is larger, more expensive, and can't be broken down and stored in its own stock, it's quality is superior. Everything I've read from about the Papoose from its users is very positive.

Anyone have any experience using the the US Survival Rifle with a chamfered chamber or with high velocity rounds?

Why not a Kel-Tec Sub 2000? 9mm has PLENTY of power, doof enoug range and uses the same ammo as your pistol!

Thanks. I hadn't thought about this. I use a Glock 23, but I see the Kel-Tec Sub 2000 comes in a .40 S&W model too, so that would work well for me even if I can't use the same magazine. More powerful than I was thinking about, but that's a good thing. And it folds up to only 16". I'm liking your suggestion . . . a lot.

The SUB 2000 comes in Glock Mag configuration. Mine uses Glock mags, in 9mm of course. It folds down into such SUCH a small package it can be tucked anywhere!

for a survival rifle why not consider an AK action cant go wrong with an Ak man

Thanks to all who provided info. Ended up deciding on the S2K in .40 S&W since I have a Glock 23. I bought a nice used one at the gun show at Dulles Expo Center today.





Already put in an order from Tacticool Products for bolt tube and operating handle covers. Hope to do some shooting with this next weekend.

Good choice! Get the Kel-Tec strap and their pitcatinny rail too. A recoil pad wouldn't be a bad addition either.
