Augusta County schools ban chapstick

Post by mamabearCali »

So on the topic of stupid no good gooberment nosey busybodies Augusta country has banned chapstick. Their argument is that it is a medication.

What I want to know is if these idiots on these boards take medication to be this stupid or were they born that way. The insanity is beyond belief. I always have chapstick with me, always have, always will. There is nothing worse than getting chapped lips mid-day and not being able to do anything but lick them and endure the pain.

Stupid, sorry, no good, busy bodies. If I lived there I would find out who is responsible for that decision and do my best to see to it that they were removed from their position.

I wonder if beeswax, coconut oil, olive oil, and orange peels are banned too....cause that is why my current chapstick is made out of.

I hate the school systems. They don't do their primary job well (educating children) so they go on to try and find things they can do well. Like being nosy busy bodies micro managing what children can eat, wear, and even put on their lips under their care.

Unfortunately they fancy themselves as "caretakers" because that is what society demands of them. Education has become a secondary goal of public schools.

If they were held accountable as caretakers they would be brought up on neglect charges for denying care and nutrition to their charges.

I know of no parent that waits for a doctors note to administer chap stick to a child's chapped lips.

The "ban" has been in place for years banning over the counter medications. At some point someone interpreted it to include chapstick. The reason you are hearing about it now is that their is a petition being circulated to allow it specifically.

The intended purpose was to protect your kids from what other kids bring to school. A few years ago there were a number of incidents involving some kids sharing the various medications plus the caffeine pills marketed to truck driver's to help them keep awake. Pounding heartbeats, anxiety and trips to emergency rooms led to such bans. Unfortunately, given our overly litigious society the school board is attempting to avoid lawsuits.

Here is something for folks to ponder. Cracked and broken lips and cold sores can happen at the same time. Some students at your kid's school could have oral herpes, it is not necessarily just a sexually transmitted disease. What are the possibilities of kids sharing chapstick? If your kid contracts it via the sharing, what is your reaction going to be? Are you going to try to sue somebody?
You just have to ask yourself, is he telling you the truth based on knowledge and experience or spreading internet myths?

So don't share chapstick.....doy.......we cannot bubble wrap the world. I cannot believe that we have to say that.

Instead of teaching why we don't share chapstick and other personal hygiene items (deordorant, hairbrushes, tooth brushes) say in the first week of 1st grade, we just ban the use of them. How lazy.

For heavens sakes my toddler knows to only use her tooth brush and not her sisters. Why do we think that 10 year olds can't be as smart as a 2 year old.

They should remember litigious things go both ways. My kid comes home after band practice in the sun with blistered lips and bleeding sores because they would not permit them to use chapstick, they can be sued for that too.

edited to add: I just remembered that I had to get my optometrist to write me a note so I could use sunglasses during band practice. This type of crap has been going on a long time and is as good a reason as any to tell the powers that be to shove off and keep their mitts off of your kids.

I agree, however, any one of those items would likely be allowed, but in combination they become a compound and that's where they get you.

A compound that is entirely edible....it could be part of a school lunch for heavens sakes....anyway. I am sick and tired of this nonsense.

Learning is impeded when children are scared, have to use the bathroom, are in pain (chapped lips hurt), and are hungry. As I have read of policies just this week that have left children in all of those conditions for hours with little chance of relief or remedy I have to conclude that school administrators (the ones who make policy) are not interested in teaching, but rather in controlling. That is abominable and such a betrayal of trust.

The public schools should be exhibit #1 why government should never ever be put in charge of children welfare. They fail miserably. When kids graduate after 13 years of work what are they qualified to do? Many of them do jobs they could have done at a 6-8th grade education level. Some can't even read or do simple math. So what is the point then of this mandated education?

This may come from state day-care licensing standards, which by the way, are imposed on private schools so the state can regulate them.

My wife teaches at a private Montessori school up here and said they have always had to have permission to administer chapstick to the students. Regular old body lotion for dry skin requires a note. All this stuff must be stored under lock and key when not in use.

Probably won't get too far trying to sue the school system, a teacher, or a principal. Included in that mountain of paperwork that you sign when you enroll your child in public school, is language that states that you absolve the school system (and employees) of any sort of responsibility for the health and well being of your child, and that you agree to carry that burden.

'll yeah! And chikken noodle is medicine!

I for one keep the suntan lotion under lock and key here at home, too. If it could blow up an airplane, I certainly wouldn't let the kids have access to it.

Maybe they won't mind taking it up the butt sans jelly. That's medication too.

What if someone's kid has napped lips in the winter time? Make them lick their lips and make it worse? Have bleeding lips everywhere? What doc would even write a 'scrip for Chapstick? Also, forcing parents to get a prescription for something easily found OTC at the end of a food lion check out line? I think the school should then force up some $$$ to get that covered.

There is some sense in not giving a 4 year old chapstick (they'll just eat it--why mine is entirely edible--I have preschoolers in the house!). Hand lotion will get everywhere all over everything so I can undestand at the preschool level having those things under adult supervision.

However I see no reason to hold a 17 year old to the same rules as a 2 year old. How are these kids ever going to grow up and make real choices if they are so hamstrung 40+ hours a week.

People are able and do sue the school all the time. They win a good portion of the time. If my kid was blistered repeatedly because of an adminstrators stupidity. You better believe I would be calling a lawyer.

We homeschool. So I won't subject my kids to their abuse and incompetence. But I have to pay for it for my neighbors, so I still have a say and a stake in what goes on in those prisons they are trying to call education centers. So I pay attention to what is going on. I love my neighbors kids too and that they are subjected to such high levels of stupidity burns me up.

Just another example of gubmint protecting itself and using power just 'cuz they can. I use Chapstick several times every day because I have a permanent side effect from medical treatment that causes very dry lips. Guess it is a good thing that I am over sixty, close to seventy, and not six going on seven; else some gubmint "educator" would take away my Chapstick.

Hang in there Mamabear - someday your children will know how much love and effort Mom invested in educating, protecting and counseling them.
