That means their gun control measures are working... right?

You weren't paying attention:
"He said the city was facing an "uphill battle" and needed better state and federal laws to keep guns off the streets."
It's all because the rest of the country (you know - - those folks whose murder and gun violence rates are dropping even in the face of more gun ownership than ever) that won't disarm so a dozen or so urban sh!tholes like Chicago can deal with their problem. I guess the theory must be that if neighboring jurisdictions all outlaw guns and disarm their populace, the crooks will branch out to take advantage of more unarmed victims and the crimes that have been being committed in Chicago will get exported to those other newly-defenseless places, huh?

Sounds to me like a city that doesn't understand that the rest of the country shouldn't have to suffer because they're too incompetent to keep criminals off the street.
Hey! L.A! CHICAGO! NEW YORK! D.C.! I carried a weapon to lunch today, guess what happened?
NOT A GADAMM THANG! Nothing! It stay RIGHT in it's lil' holster, and no one fussed!

Revised numbers:
"In the course of 84 hours this past weekend, 82 people were shot in Chicago, 16 of them fatally."

That gun control bit is working out quite well for them.

This is all lovely to read, as I sit, unarmed, in Chicago.
At least I have a bag of cherries. In the event of an attack, I can spit cherry pits at my aggressor. Lol.

Improvised weapons are your friends in those situations SHMIV. I know a person who is disarmed at work, but keeps a series of baseballs around. Thrown hard enough they can do serious damage. Baseball bats are also good weapons if need be. A can of hairspray to the eyes will hurt something fierce.

If you eat too many of those cherries, you'll be a dangerous man WITHOUT a gun.

A couple thoughts/questions:
When was the last time we had 82 casualties in and 84 hour window in Afghanistan or Iraq?
Are these thugs under orders to do this so at some time, of the D-Baggers choosing, they can take aggressive executive action?
Would a good marksmanship program eventually lead to less crime?

Improvised weapons. ..
Well, I have an 80,000lb machine with a pushbar on front and a loose nut behind the wheel. The baseball idea is cool, but impractical in a truck. Got aerosol window cleaner with a pistol-grip attachment on it ( the pistol grip is made for spray paint, but is great for any aerosol can);I keep that in my door pocket. I also have an assortment of knives.
I have been contemplating strapping a flair gunto the steering column; I figure that I have reason enough to keep it for it's intended purpose, seeing as I drive through mountains in inclement weather on a regular basis. Also contemplating a machete, as I have had the occasional need to cut brush to gain traction.

What drives me absolutely nuts is this...
McCarthy said police will continue a summer program to flood high-violence areas with police, but he said that without stronger gun laws, police will continue to face an uphill battle.
So, let me see if I read this right. The problem is we need less gun on the street, so we are going to flood the streets with more people with guns?
Such a hypocrite that he was able to completely contradict himself in a single sentence.
This is another one...
Among the suspects: a man wanted in connection with a murder who has 21 prior arrests, and another with six previous arrests, including one this year for aggravated assault for discharging a weapon.
"How this individual is out on bond is beyond me," McCarthy said.
Hmmm. Maybe there is a problem with the judicial system in Chicago, Il. I am not a fan of micro managing a populace to the point of jailing people for minor offense, but maybe somewhere around arrest number 3, some judge should have said "Pattern of behavior justifies no bond until the trials are over." There is something to point the finger at, not legal gun ownership.

You have the height advantage to shoot right down into the thugs face too. I wouldn't want to see what a flare gun does to flesh at arms length.

@Kreutz: I have a friend with a somewhat deformed face. Apparently, he went fishing with a group that contained a bloomin' idiot who found the flair gun on the boat. The idiot shot my friend in the face with that flair gun.
Apparently, the flair sticks to human flesh as it burns. Also, according to my friend, it is quite the painful experience.
He said that he ended up driving himself to the ER after getting back to shore; there was an argument over who would take him. They were still arguing as he was driving away.

"Flaming Beanbag Round"...until now I have never wanted a flare gun...
