What percentage of employers would y'all say use Microsoft Internet Explorer? After I get some input on this, I'll explain why I'm asking.

My employer uses IE, but I install FireFox and use that instead. I can't stand IE...especially since they started doing all of their idiotic "Compatibility" switching on/off...screw that.

I've switched to Comodo Ice Dragon. It is based on Firefox but faster and more secure. DNS requests go to Comodo's servers, not Mozilla's, and their privacy policies are more favorable.

No, guys.......... the question is: What percent of employers (that's BUSINESSES) use MSIE? I've seen figures that would indicate it's more than 75%. What say you?

That falls in line with what I see from my small business customers.

That would not surprise me. Why take the risk of people installing unauthorized 3rd party software if Windows comes with a free browser? The company doesn't care about the quality of the browser.

100% of enterprises use IE in some fashion. There are some business essential and government sites on which pages do not render properly on any other browser. Even Apple has Wintendo boxes.

Now, the 75% number is likely close to the number of *enterprises* (vs. Cappy's Crab Hut) that use IE as their primary *supported* browser. Many support Chrome and FF; some even support Safari. Many more tolerate, but do not support alternate browsers.

It's a matter of support (packaging and patching) costs.

My Fortune 100 employer is 100% MSIE. Firefox is only available for developers that need to test compatibility for customer-facing web systems.

I would have to say that since almost all businesses us Microsoft PC's for most of their staff, it is likelike well over 80%.

100% of all of my customers since 1994 have used IE with scatted departments (like imaging and multimedia) in Mac OS.

Sounds like a good number, but I'll bet it is on the decline. The small tech firm I work for dumped our whole Outlook setup for g-mail several years ago, and everyone got Gag- I mean Goog- uhh CHROME. Since we have a growing number of off-site interests, we are migrating to Google Drive as opposed to granting VPN access to our local storage. A few of the old-timers, even those who should know better, still push the button on IE, though. Maybe it's a "Conservative Vs Enlightened" thing.

Used Chrome myself 'till Google started going all PC about guns, now I am back to FF, no regrets. This Comodo thing sounds interesting.

IceDragon is a good move and choosing to use Comodo's DNS allows them to reduce your exposure to malicious sites.

Mozilla doesn't see anyone's DNS queries, though. Not how things work. You should still hate them, but for other reasons.

Long story: DNS requests go to the nameservers set by your OS. If you manage your IP stack manually, you set it to one or more IPs yourself. If you use DHCP like most residential users, the DNS servers are part of the settings you receive with the DHCP-reply. Your browser uses your OS's defaults unless you're using some kind of a proxy or change them (this is an option in IceDragon).

Some of our people manager systems are in SAP, and it prefers IE. Typically, I script my way around that and just use Safari on a Mac.

Seems like the whole world is using SAP for something. Even if you don't realize it as a user, it is baked into a lot of stuff these big outfits use to capture information, etc. If it runs best on IE, I guess that explains a lot about why IE seems to be being used (as near as I can tell from my limited perspective) by almost every business from the Fortune 100 down to Clem's bait shop.

We use SAP for point of sale systems on iOS.

For any navy.mil sites, I use IE - those sites just behave better with that browser. For everything else, I use FireFox.

Home use, I use Chrome.

Our plant is 90% + IE as primary browser. Some services we use do require firefox or chrome, and engineering and it have others for test purposes.

So I started a new gig yesterday (inside the Beltway [boo!]) and what comes out during the orientation? Certain apps (timesheets & payroll) only work with IE. In this case it has nothing to do with the apps or how the pages are rendered, but because someone decided to implement AD-only single sign-on in some screwy way.

I'm still not sure what the intent of the original question was...

PS - How far in the weeds are we taking this thread?

From what I have seen, every business that has a restriction on what browser you can use, rerquires the use of IE. Some by choice, other because it comes installed already on most windows desktop images, and employees do not have the permnissions to remove/replace it. Usually large corporations do it to standardize troubleshooting.

Smaller companies are more likely to not have restrictions. In the history of companies I have worked for it has been 100% had IE, and 50% had only IE. Most compaies I worked for were ISPs or other IT companies that required the use of every poular browser to insure uniformity of web page appearance and function of applications.
