Question about purchasing a handgun in VA *with a twist!

Good morning all,

I am new to the forum and after searching around the internets for a bit, I have a question about purchasing a handgun in VA. First, a bit about my background...I am a prior LEO with the United States Coast Guard and am doing my shore duty in DC. Since I am an avid gun enthusiast, there was no way I was living in DC. As such, I recently moved to Alexandria. I went to Quantico Tactical last week to hunt down a Springfield TRP Operator (a gun that was difficult to get in my last state of Massachusetts even as a LEO). They had it in stock, I had cash..easy day. I brought a copy of my lease saying I live in VA and my official orders. Only thing is, my orders say I am stationed in DC, not Virginia. Oh crap! The store clerk put my gun on layaway and said all I had to do was get a VA ID card from the DMV and wait 30 days. Fine, I am in no hurry. However, I went over to the DMV and they only issue ID cards to residents.

What should my next step be to get my TRP out of purgatory? I am planning to EVENTUALLY switch my residency to VA and get a concealed carry (I had/have one for MA and NY). Is it more painless to get a non-res CC in the meantime, or switch my residency to VA? Any help anyone could afford me would be greatly appreciated. Have a great day!

I figure since you're living in VA you might as well switch your residency to VA. I don't see any benefits to having a DC residency.

Exactly!

Change the residency, and you're in like Flynn.

Become a VA resident.

As a service member you have 3 places you can claim residency:
Duty station
Domicile
Home of record

A VA FFL may only transfer a handgun to you, if you can prove VA residency.

Good copy on all...thanks for the quick info! I think I am going to turn in my CC paperwork for Alexandria, and get my residency along the way... The TRP will just have to wait to I get it all straightened out. Again, appreciate all the info!!

Hmmm..I thought there was a special deal for people with orders to DC... maybe that was only for orders to the Pentagon...

BTW, I filed for my CC permit, received it in less than 2 weeks from Warren County.
