Not sure what you are looking for. Automatic openers are restricted to LEO.

Civilians can get spring assisted. I carry a Benchmade mini Barrage. Not cheap. Well worth it.

I carry a Kershaw #1620H3, spring-assisted with a pocket clip. One handed operation from pocket to open. Cost me about $60 a few years back. Good steel, keeps a good edge.

pretty vague question, if thats what it was supposed to be. assisted our auto? as stated, autos are restristed to LEO/MIL only in VA. Assisted are fine.

Next question, whats your budget? Be cautious of lower pirce knives. Before I knew about good EDC blades I had numerous S&W knives that would break after a couple months and none would stay sharp. This is even more true of assisted opening knives. You get what you pay for most of the time so a cheap AO will not be AO for long. A good budget AO is the Kershaw Cryo. the Cryo 1 is pretty small but the Cryo 2 is a decent size.

If you are willing to spend a decent amount, you can't really go wrong with Benchmade. I rotate between my Benchmade 100001 Volli AO and my Spyderco Manix 2 (not AO but an EXCELLENT blade).

Ahh I think people just didn't know what you meant by "AO". The kershaw speeds are always nice and fast and not to pricey but that said I tend to break them...

For Assisted Opening the price range is all over the place.As YoungGun said stay away from the super cheap as they tend not to be made well. I have the Zero Tolerance G10 and love it for EDC.

yea AO is typically asisted opening and people tend to just say auto for automatic openers but sometimes the lingo gets mixed up so just needed to Clarify. Again, you cant go wrong with any benchmade IMHO. Zero Tolerance knives are great. A lot of really good manual openers are just as quick and smooth (if not smoother) than AO blades. Like I mentioned, I regularly switch between a Benchmade Volli which is AO and my Spyderco Manix 2 which is manual but after about 2 days of owning the Manix it opens just as quick which the flick of a wrist and feels a lot smoother too. Plus, with manual, you never have to worry about the spring wearing out on you and turning your expensive AO into a manaual folder haha. If you decide to go with a manual you will open your options up greatly. I usually buy my blades from bladehq.com. Amazon will sometimes win out if they have better prices but thats a rarity in my experience.

+1 on both Spyderco and Benchmade (my EDC). I actually looked down on the Benchmade for being better suited to left-side carry - until I took a course that involved firearm retention. Now its my favorite by far and can reliably be opened with one hand while worn on either side.

Unlike what another has experienced I've had good luck with S&Ws and haven't cried when they've been confiscated or broken. Since I'd only paid $20 for those I found them to be a good value if not a great knife.

I've also had 2 seemingly identical Ken Onion Kershaws where one was fantastic and the other complete garbage. Visually identical, the $30 one from Wal-Mart would not hold and edge of any kind and the more expensive one was great. Seems like they did something to get that price down...

I have a nice spring assisted S&W knife, it is EXTREMELY sharp, and it holds it's edge very well. I think it ran around $50 bucks or so.
