Hahaha maybe use water balloons or even pool balls first! I was expecting the throw to go backwards.

Charles.

Man does that bring back some interesting flashbacks to time I was the grenade pit safety office. Had several close calls but never had anyone injury except maybe some bruised ribs.... The last time I did it I had multiple "events" in 1 day and this was after multiple throws of practice grenades. During the live grenade throws things got interesting considering blast radius these things have. The grenade pits are constructed of reinforced concrete with a "well" or "sump" to kick the grenade into in the event that the thrower drops it.

1) - you lady threw the grenade a whopping 10' from and was watching it over the front wall despite being instructed to duck down. I saw the grenade land and she was still standing. I grabbed her by the back of her armor and drug her down and just as she was hit the deck we felt the shock wave. I looked at her and she was pale as a ghost. I called over the CWO in charge and told him I wanted her to get back in line at which point she somehow turned even paler.

2) Next was a "macho" Marine who I noticed was talking trash with his buddies. Command to "thumb clip, pull pin. prepare to throw. throw!" and I hear "sh!t" as I see the grenade rolling on the floor of the pit. He tried to grab it and I kicked it down into the well and threw him over the back wall (he outweighed me by at least 50#) and I landed on top of him. I told him to get back in line after informing the CWO.

Both of their 2nd throws were uneventful and the CWO came over to talk to me later. He asked me how long I'd been doing this (my 3rd rotation) and he seemed taken aback a bit once he heard my MOS was I.T. (computers) Heard him tasking with Top a while later and I caught the phrase "crass a$$ed computer jockey) which made my day :)
