Looking for shooting land to lease

Post by RO73 »

I live in Loudoun County. My brother and I would like to lease a small piece of land to shoot on. We are tired of the ranges around here and frankly...tired of shooting at paper. Most of the land available is large acreage of hunting land. I'm simply looking for a small plot to shoot on. I'm not sure it's even possible.
Where does one start looking? All the websites out there are for hunting.
Is it feasible to find something within an hour's drive of Loudoun County?

Thanks for any advice/suggestions.

good luck with your search, The wife and myself did the same thing about 5 years ago. We finally give up and purchased 60 acres down in Appomattox county.

That's a tough find at an affordable price...We had an 800 acre Farm in southern VA. that we "Rented" for 28 yrs. I had 3 Friends who like to hunt Ground Hogs as much as I do and we worked out a deal with the land owner for year around hunting and fishing rights just because we controlled the Varmits on the property. Very little $$$ ever exchanged hands...We always helped with little projects on the Farm , fixing Gates , repairing Barns and other out buildings. Last year when He turned over the Farming Operation to his Family , we lost the Use Rights . So since the Wife and I don't like to shoot at Controlled Indoor Ranges our only option was to purchase our own Land and Build our own Range. We bought 30 acres in Dinwiddie and are in the process of building a Cabin and our own "Private Range". We felt this was our only choice after looking for several years for another Track of Land to lease. Hope your search works our for you !

Unfortunately, I'm not in any position to buy right now. I have 2 houses (1 is a rental) so I can't really make that big of a commitment until we sell our rental.
I'm going to keep looking as I am determined to find something. Thank you both for your responses and thanks for wishing me luck. Lord knows I will need it.

I'm in the same boat… maybe getting a group of us together might make it more financially feasible to lease?

The problem is getting the site suitable, like installing a backstop, etc.

I'm fine with going in with a few other gun owners. As long as they are responsible. I have been looking but no luck so far.

im in the early stages of buying a house with 50ac in very SE suffolk, half a mile from NC. it was the only place with more then 5ac, and only place that didnt have neighbors literately a stones throw away. i was amazed at how many places were advertised as 'wooded, secluded, etc', yet you can see houses on all sides, and across the street. im leaving the police state to get away from close neighbors, not moving just to get an extra 50 feet of room.

it seemed most bare land is found in the western half of the state, so if thats anywhere close to where you were looking......

A citizen may not be required to offer a good and substantial reason why he should be permitted to exercise his rights. The right‘s existence is all the reason he needs.

Unfortunately not close to where I am. Best of luck with your new property. I have to say I'm a bit envious.

Short of going door to door on the big acre lots, it's hard to find a good spot unless there's somebody you know. I've looked around Bull Run as there a lot of 10+ acre lots there but no luck yet either.
