SIMFEROPOL, Ukraine (AP) — Russian forces backed by helicopter gunships and armored vehicles Saturday took control of a village near the border with Crimea on the eve of a referendum on whether the region should seek annexation by Moscow, Ukrainian officials said.

The action in Strilkove appeared to be the first move outside Crimea, where Russian forces have been in effective control since late last month. There were no reports of gunfire or injuries. The incident raises tensions already at a high level before Sunday's referendum.

I think Putin is going to put the former pres back in control. Maybe I'm nuts, but it seems like the right thing to do. I might be missing something, but it seems like ever since Obama has been in the white house, our government has been supporting a lot of rebel groups instead of playing the diplomat.

Don't get me wrong, I don't want to see people abused by the gov in any way, shape or form, but us supporting violent overthrows by locals seems to go against international law. Esp since our government would be putting people in jail and killing citizens if the same thing happened here.

I'm on the fence on this one. I am inclined towards the US sitting this one out and telling Europe to let us know how it turns out.
