Today, .22LR is being bought and sold, speculated and traded like a hot stock, or the now infamous bitcoins.

Havn't seen any at Wally World in a loooooong time. I did find a few boxes (50 count) at a mom/pop store recently for $4.99/box. Only .22LR I've seen in months. They were sold out the next day.

Too bad Walmart and other retailers aren't able to participate in this free market by increasing their price to help smooth out some of the shortages. Increased prices send signals to send more product to a place, but when the government prohibits that through "anti-gouging" laws this is what you end up with, a secondary market that basically does what the primary market should be doing.

Plus this eliminates the secondary market, because there is no markup to be had if the primary will sell the product a fair-market price.

so would you rather see wall-mart sell 525-bricks at $85, and have them on the shelf, or $25, but nobody can get them unless your bud's with the stockboy who calls you when they come in.

I think the primary market would be able to adjust their prices easier to maintain a better equilibrium between supply and demand so that you don't see the shortages that cause the $85 price spike in the first place.

Buying .22 is almost impossible these days. The Walmart employees either get it for themselves to flip or they are paid by someone to hold it for them. Still, they don't use it for themselves (training, Appleseed, etc.), they flip it for >$90 a brick. I just bought three bricks for $100 and I only use it to shoot with my son, so it should last a while. I'm not paying what some of these guys are asking for their .22 ammo!

I was able to get some at Dicks a few weeks ago. Tried again recently and was told I got lucky last time because they were putting it out at random times to accommodate more customers. The guy said corporate found out and told them to put it out immediately and he says the same guys are there every morning scooping it up every day.... Dicks

Dicks Corporate seems to have dropped the ball on that call.

Seems that accommodating more customers might be a good thing.

It's DICKS SPORTING GOODS! These as the same azzhats who pulled that crap after Newtown, denying people rifles they PAID for, because it was "politically expendable".

I won't shop there if I can help it.

It isn't going to get any cheaper either. Remember the last U.S. primary lead smelter was shut down in December:
http://www.thenewamerican.com/economy/s ... ad-smelter

I like the environment a lot, but I do believe that the congress of the U.S. needs to reassert their oversight on it and all federal agencies by requiring all regulations which have the power of law must be submitted to the Congress and Congress must approve their enforcement. So that whether it be a lead smelter or coal fired power plants that must be equipped with non-existent technology requirement, the EPA can not put the regulation in place without both houses of Congress' approval.

About three weeks ago I went to a parking lot event at a local gun shop in Warwick, RI. There were two pallets of .22lr inside the store with no purchase limits. The brick of 500 rounds was $59.99 and the box of 100 rounds was less than $10. Certainly not cheap but it was available and much lower than what I've seen elsewhere. I'm sure those two pallets were gone by the end of the weekend and I haven't been back since to see. My family and I enjoy shooting .22lr and have 4 firearms chambered for this round. It's a shame we've been in this price gouging for almost 2 years.
