Virginia Gun Owners Forum - VGOF

I'm currently finishing the NRA Pistol Instructor cert and find myself in need of a single-action revolver (which, outside of the handling practical, I have never seen in person in my life) so that I can actually teach the course. Any recommendations on (1) make and model of a REALLY CHEAP but safe and reliable single-action that I can get for $100-$125, and (2) source for same? As I said, I don't have more than a passing acquaintance with even the most popular names in the category, so I wouldn't know a good deal if the hammer bit my thumb.

Note that because this gun is going to be used for teaching only -- I already have enough guns for which I can't afford ammo -- it doesn't need to be new or in like-new condition. Used but safe and mechanically sound is fine by me. I just need to know good, reliable names other than Ruger, and potential sources besides GunBroker. Also, I know the 22s may be cheaper, but slightly larger calibers might be easier for students to load and unload.

I'm not sure if you'll find any in the $100-$125 range but EAA and Rossi seem to make decent pistols at a reasonable price. I have an EAA .357 MAG with a 4" barrel that I like a lot and I have a Rossi slug gun that I've been very impressed with after several deer seasons.

You could try a Chiappa SAA. Only in 22. LR and nothing fancy but new/used under $200. Anything larger, except for heavily used relics, is going to run double or more you budget. Not much of a market for cheap Single actions, the buyers looking for something pretty I imagine. Could go with a black powder knockoff but I imagine that's not the direction your trying to take being an instructor and all. NAA makes primarily single actions as well, $200+, but all are very small 22.'s.

Look into the Heritage Rough Rider. The .22 seems to be the most popular RR, but they are made in larger calibers.

Gander has them on sale now for $179.00; if my credit cards werent maxed out due to the home renovation from hell (is there any other kind?) I'd have bought one.

The Rough Rider .22, incidentally, comes with a cylinder for .22 mag.

I had one, before the tragic boating accident, and was happy with it. Shame they can't swim.

Based on my experience with the .22, I would expect that I would be happy with the larger calibers.

I've read about folks that get them for a truck gun, and they get tossed into tool boxes, or behind seats, and are generally abused, and still perform as needed.

@Kreutz: pick up a used one. Given your apparent affinity for historical looking things, as well as your appreciation of things that don't cost much, I believe that you would enjoy it. "Rough Rider" is kind of a cheesy sounding name, but it pays tribute to Teddy Roosevelt and his crew. I hear ya on that renovation, btw. I'm in the middle of one, myself. Bought a littlecottage nearly a year ago, aain't spent a single night in it.
