When one looks at negligent discharges on record, I wonder what the ratio of LEO ND to non LEO ND is?

Typical press reporting on guns...

Counceller's 40-caliber Glock handgun accidentally discharged Saturday afternoon while he was at Wullf's Gun Shop.

The article would have us believe the Glock discharged itself. Just once I would like to read what actually happened like... Connersville Police Chief David Counceller shot himself with his own Glock service pistol while holstering it within Wullf's Gun Shop.

Oh, so his clothing shot him? He just had the bad luck to be wearing the wrong type clothing I guess. Bull, he shot himself as a result of improper gun handling. And personally, I doubt the clothing had anything to do with it; odds are he had his finger on the trigger while holstering abruptly. If I were his boss, I would fire him.

Well, there was the holster that caused a discharge, or was that person lying as well? In this instance, the unfortunate carrier took responsibility for a previous ND. Sounds like an honest person to me.

Well, there was the holster that caused a discharge, or was that person lying as well?

I'm familiar with that ND - saw the pictures as well. The person was not lying, but what he did not do was properly maintain his gear. The holster was a factor, but the root cause in this ND was a gun owner who did not properly maintain his gear and replace a worn out misshaped holster that was interfering with the trigger rather than safeguarding it.

And I'm not saying the police chief was lying either. He may believe his clothing bunching up caused the trigger to depress enough discharge the pistol. Sorry, that's just not very likely.

I've tried (with an unloaded gun) to get enough clothing into the trigger to get it to fire while re-holstering. It's not that easy. I know others have tried and have also found it difficult. I'm not saying that it's impossible, nor am I saying that we shouldn't be careful while re-holstering, but I'm a bit skeptical of this excuse.

At any rate, it's operator error - it's his responsibility to ensure that nothing can snag the trigger while re-hostering. If he can't handle guns properly, I don't think he should be in a position to carry one for work, let alone be allowed to point it at someone. Give him a desk job and take away his gun.

The vast majority of people who have an ND during holstering will claim and may even legitimately think they did not have their finger on the trigger. But, they did. In nearly all cases, holstering NDs are the result of two things; having a finger on the trigger, and thrusting the gun into the holster too quickly and forcefully.

Stupidity needs no excuse "THE SUN WAS IN MY EYES!" "MY CLOTHES SHOT ME!" "GLOCKS NEED SAFETIES!"

Noooo, you're an unsafe gun handler, and a LEO to boot! Yet again proving my point, "ADMIN" in ANY configuration for ANY reason, is usually the CAUSATION, not the SOLUTION.

No gun needs a safety. You are the safety.

I bet dollars to donuts that LEOs have a higher rate of ND. Just like they have a higher rate of negligent homicide, higher rate of spousal homicide, etc. The fact is, they deal with the guns, and death, regularly, and are trained to be desensitized. It causes the high rates compared to non LEOs.
