Is National CC Reciprocity in Our Future?
Well, I have my fingers crossed. I really feel like if this is going to pass, this is our year.
The House passed the "National Reciprocity Act" legislation in 2011 and has been refreshed every year. Sen Cornyn brought up the bill "Constitutional Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act" in April 2013 as an amendment to “Manchin-Toomey” and in support of the intent of the "National Reciprocity Act".
Harry Reid has been doing his damnedest to stop the "National Reciprocity Act" from going through by preventing it from hitting the Senate floor. In April, Sen Cornyn's bill "Constitutional Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act" was only 3 votes short. This year is expected to be a win. If it goes through, you can bet your bottom dollar, after 3 years of the house trying to get this trough, this will be passed into law.
If you want to read about it, I have provided a couple of links.

This is great news. I don't see any links though. Hopefully Barry and his pen phone will stay out of this one.
I had a SCAR 17 and 16. I also had a bunch of Glocks and a couple H&K pistols. Oh and a DDM4, but I sold everything when our government told me these dangerous tools can actually hurt someone. Apparently they grow legs and go on killing sprees.

2A IS national reciprocity. That's been getting violated for ages.
2A needs to be properly observed.

You know... I fully agree. We don't need permits nor do we worry about what state we are in when we exercise any other constitutional right. I have always felt that any law is infringement.
I do have to say, I agree with not letting known violent felons have guns. If you have a proven track record of being a violent screw-up... to bad. Outside of that... I don't think we should be limited in any way.
This will be a step in the right direction. But I doubt we will ever get to where I think we should be.

Re: Is National CC Reciprocity in Our Future?
I'm not keen on violent felons having guns, either. But, if he wants one, he'll have one, regardless of what the law says. I'd rather not have my rights infringed just so that the DA will
have another charge to throw at him, in the event that they catch him.
Besides, if one is inclined to engage in violent and felonious behavior, he certainly doesn't need a gun to assist him. There are plenty of other things available to him, potentially far more dangerous than any currently available firearm on the market.
And, of course, if the violent felon is that bad, why the hell is he walking the streets, to begin with?

You would be surprised how many known violent offenders are walking around free right now. It's pretty scary. I read a study last year that said something along the lines of (in 2011) 58-60 percent of known rapist and 36-37 percent of known murderers were out on the streets of the US.

Doesn't surprise me, at all. Especially since I've been hearing about overcrowded prisons as farback as I can remember.
I would like to see public hanging make a comeback. That's how to deal with violent criminals.
For misdemeanors and non violent felony convictions, stocks (as seen by the court house in Colonial Williamsburg) should be utilized again.

"No freeman shall ever be debarred the use of arms..." was what Thomas Jefferson wanted to put into the VA Constitution, of course, we still hung horse thieves back then... I don't think you could be a repeat violent offender.

Re: Is National CC Reciprocity in Our Future?
I'm wondering how it might be used/abused/twisted to make CC permits harder to get and keep. For instance, if the federal law said that each state must come up to federally-established minimum requirements to be met before a permit will qualify for reciprocity it is then a matter of the feds slowly and incrementally raising the bar. Or how would you like to be required to register your firearm to get/keep a CC permit, as I understand some states currently require? Does anyone doubt Bloomberg would be knee-deep into screwing this up for us before the sun set on the first day after it passed? And then there is the fact that it gives me heartburn to have the federal government policing state action on firearms regulation; because after all, if we acquiesce that they can legislate to require CC, then might the grabbers later argue they can legislate to deny it, too? I feel better if the feds stay out of this. As with any intrusion by the federal government into any thing, I view it with great suspicion.

Exactly. For nationwide reciprocity, you can be sure they'll use the requirements for Illinois instead of the requirements for Virginia.

I agree, I have always been leery of federal laws. Once they exert some control, it's only a matter of time until they try to expand that control.

I'm still surprised by how many pro-state rights people are cool with national reciprocity.
Live in a pro-gun red state? Happy with your state's gun laws? Just wait until the Feds get to scrap that for their system. I like to call this National Chicago Gun Laws.

In truth, we'd do well to be leery of ANY law; from the Fed all the way down to small town local ordinance.

Re: Is National CC Reciprocity in Our Future?
I think some of you guys are too doom and gloom. What if you needed a passport to go to another state because you are not a resident? What if you had to get a driver's license for every state you wanted to drive in?
This is the United States and someone/something needs to be a benchmark for interstate interoperability. Read the bills. They don't force any state to do anything except honor out of state permits... but in typical legal speak. These folks are attempting to undo some of the crap laws, piece by peace. In this case, if the Manchin-Toomey gun bill went through, it would have nullified a part of that.
Like I said, I would love for all gun laws to be abolished and found unconstitutional, because they are. However, that is never going to happen. We need to take back as much ground s possible, beating them at their own game. That is, unless you think what happened to that Jersey family in MD was a good thing. I sure don't.

But you don't, because the states recognize documents from other states. Those decisions however were made at the state level to recognize those documents. If Virginia HB 705 can get passed, Virginia will recognize those out of state permits. Hopefully that will get more free states to do the same thing and you don't need to get the federal government involved.MarcSpaz wrote:I think some of you guys are too doom and gloom. Re: Is National CC Reciprocity in Our Future?
You are mistaken. Actually our right to drive in other states is regulated by the Federal DOT, not at the state level. The federal DOT established standards for licenses, ID's, vehicle registration, even acceptance of insurance ID cards and insurance policies.
Freedom of movement between states is regulated under United States law, and is governed primarily by the "Privileges and Immunities Clause" of the United States Constitution.
VA passing that bill is the equivalent to what the House and Senate are trying to do. Orgs like VCDL, NRA and others see it as a pro-2A law. So why would it be an anti-2A if done federally?
