Carrying at work?

Question about carrying and being at work, this isnt a topic that I've ever really thought of since my full time job is in DC, but I've been thinking about picking up a part time job as well over here in VA, so my question is, is it necessary to inform an employer that you carry or get permission to carry while at work here in VA? Assuming the business does not have a no guns policy/sign, since I wouldnt apply somewhere that did.

Most companies are not going to allow their employees to carry at work. That's just the way it is.

Carrying a firearm at work without their knowledge and consent? That's guaranteed to put you in the unemployment line or even jail. Unless you are fortunate enough to work for someone that supports self defense at work.

Regardless, the only way to do this is to have the discussion with your employer.

Jay summed it up nicely. Talk to your employer.

I carry at work all day. Sometimes, I have a gun on my desk, too. Sometimes, I go through the office clearing rooms. Sometimes, I use my SIRT pistol and work on trigger control with a target in the main hallway. My boss doesn't mind a bit!

Nice! I wish I could do that at work, but I would be in the federal prison faster than you could say habeas corpus.

Remember also there is a "Carry in your car" law for STATE workers! However Private companies prohibit. (Dorm had a whole topic in the General Discussion area)

My company has a policy against possessing weapons on "company property." It's listed in their handbook which everyone must sign that they have read.

The office is located in VA in a public high-rise with a variety of tenants. We have a parking deck (which serves all of the tenants and visitors.) I have considered carrying in my car. According to the handbook I can't have weapons on company property. In my mind this only means our offices - which are a number of stories removed from the parking deck.

All that said, I'd like to first get some kind of secure lock box in the vehicle. I do worry about vehicle break-in or vehicle theft. (I've had my car stolen once before.)

There are safes made for in-vehicle storage. I've never used one, but they might be a good option for you.

Just be careful when you transfer your gun from your body to your safe in the morning, and vice versa when you leave at night, so that no one will see you.

My work doesnt permit firearms on company property.

I park on the city street and walk further to get to the door, problem solved.
