Foster vs Rifled Slug question

Post by snatale42 »

Hey guys, while I'm not new to Rifles and Handguns, I'm still pretty new to shotguns. I recently bought a Mossberg 500 Turkey and so far it's great but I've been thinking about getting into deer as well, my initial thoughts were to get a rifled barrel for Sabot's. I then heard that Foster vs Sabot isn't a "huge" difference, while I'm no authority on this, that doesn't seem right to me. My understanding of Foster's is that their simply propelled forward with no spin and only accurate as shorter distance. Then the whole rifled choke thing came up. Can somebody please set me straight on this. The Fosters I have shot are thru an IC. I don't yet have a filed barrel or know anybody with one to actually do the comparison myself.

Foster slugs have rifling on the slug itself..They do spin coming out of the barrel. A little practice and you should be able to hit at 75 yards easy with a Foster.. My experience has been to correct for elevation only on calm days..

For a dedicated deer hunting shotgun, get a rifled barrel and shoot sabot slugs. It is the most accurate platform. Many people get lucky and any box of ammo is good to go. Some people must shop around to find something that will group decently.

For a round about survival gun, 18-21 inch smooth bore, rifle sights, modified choke (must have screw in choke because, sometimes modified is not right). Will be functional for everything, but not the best at anything. Expect to shop around alot to find the right slugs.

I have a cheap Rossi single-shot 20 gauge with a rifled barrel that shoots 2-3" groups at 100 yards with 1oz 'Buckhammer' slugs all day long. Never tried any sabot slugs but I might give some a try when I see what the gun can do at 150-200 yards.
