Im taking the daughter camping this weekend, Id like to know if I can target shoot at the camp site which is located in the National Forest? Please quote previsions if such exist.

I feel pretty sure, if I am shooting in a direction that is safe (as verified by NatGeo Topo maps and Google Earth) and remain in the general area of the camp sight, I will not be confused as hunting and should be okay.

Targets will be AR500 steel at various distance, so no live trees will be the target (which I know from experience is in fact a concern).

In VA's national forests it is only legal to target shoot on designated shooting ranges. It is currently hunting season, specifically black powder/ muzzleloader season for deer as of tomorrow. Please adhere to the local guidance in the national forest district you plan to be in as game wardens will be out enforcing the local regs...

Okay, thanks Marine... good info there. Potts range is just above the camp site anyway (604.2). We will focus on the camp and shoot another time, Ive almost got the WASR out of lay a way for the daughter, I got very little trigger time on mine so I figured a book end would solve that problem!!



Plus, one day I might need someone to watch my 6 from time to time.

Its a good thing to get out and camp! This weekend is about perfect weather for it and the leaves are at peak colors here in the Shenandoah Valley!

No shooting in any woods unless at a designated shooting range.... Also; would not be a good idea at all considering your other post about hunter education. If you did happen to be discharging a firearm; one of the wardens may look at you as if you are "poaching".

Oh, BTW... we camped. Tried to introduce the sidekick to hammock camping, however the cheap bags I got us for underquits were CRAP and the bum got cold.... so I threw in the towel at 9:30pm and packed in the dark.

Next camp, we will tent up and run some 4" Gander Mountain pads.. the USGI ICW bags should have a good chance to work then...

Im also working on a camping trailer, mostly its a hard sided shelter instead of a tent. No setup time, and totally storm proof. (Ill post video/pix of that... as progress (ever?) develops.)

Summer camp is easy as lard is greasy, but winter camp takes a bit more gear, so "car camping" is in order... mostly.

Hey JC.... Glad to hear you were able to gt some camping in this weekend. I know you said something about going in the National Forest... and wondering where at you are located. There is a decent shooting range in Bath County which is part of the GW National Forest, and I try to get out there from time to time. Always looking for someone to shoot with, so if you happen to be out this way; maybe we could meet up for a day of shooting.... Range is free; but they do have a cylinder for donations to help with upkeep of the range.

Craig, its close... and beautiful! Range is Potts Slope, only 3 miles from our camp.
