Bath County Shooting Range... Has anyone gone there??
Bath County Shooting Range... Has anyone gone there??
Hello there. I am thinking about going shooting tomorrow; got my Mossberg 500 with a slug barrel and scope I need to sight in. Was wondering if anyone on here has shot there before and if so; what were their feelings on it?? I did go down to Gathright a few weeks back, but do not feel as if I would be comfortable shooting the shotgun there as I really want to stand up and shoulder the gun to shoot, and the covered benches at Gathright are more or less enclosed with a little 1 - 1 1/2' by 3' opening in the front (more or less like a gun port). With this set up; you are more or less forced to sit and with the elbows on the bench; do not really get the shouldering aspect. If you have shot at Bath, what were the target posts set up like?? What was your overall impression of this range?? Is this a good range for shotgun shooting? Also; any suggestions on other possible ranges in Highland or Bath area would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

If you are talking about the range off of Rt 39 between Millboro Springs and Warm Springs, yes I have shot there several times.
The benches are covered, but open on all sides. There are 8-12 shooting lanes, I can't remember exact number. Every time I have been there has been on weekends in early June for the last 3-4 yrs.
Some friends and I have a camping reunion in the area every year.
There is a sign next to the benches that lists the rules.
One of the rules is NO shotguns or skeet shooting.
That being said, I have never seen a state employee, Game Warden or LEO at the range.
One word of warning, when you turn off the paved road at the entrance to the range, drive slow. The entrance road is very bumpy.
It is also a good idea to take your own target stand....sometimes there is something to hold a target and sometimes not.

Bath county range is pretty nice. Much cleaner than Hite Hollow and you don't have to shoot up hill. The only disadvantages are the pistol and rifle sections are not seprate and the rifle section is only 100 yards.
The targets posts are steel with chicken wire stretched between them.
Honestly I would buy a target stand that uses firring strips for uprights and then you will not have to rely on the range target hangers and place your targets at any distance you want.
I've gone to the Bath range plenty of times and been the only person there even after several hours.
