First Garand

I guess this is the hoplophile's equivalent of "we're expecting!" I just ordered an M1 Garand for my youngest son as a Christmas present and to celebrate his recent acceptance to The Citadel. He was always a somewhat ambivalent student, so I made a deal with him when he started high school that I would buy him a rifle of his choice if he did well in school (at least a B average) and got into one of his top five colleges. He is a history nut, especially about WWII, so I'm sure he will love this 1944 Springfield Armory Garand. Now to find a suitable bribe for college success... Gun porn to follow upon delivery.

I'm conflicted. Excellent news for the Citadel and the Garand, but also so much jealousy! Congrats on both!

A lot of us want you to adopt us now.
If you can, find a weekend to take him down to Ramseur, NC for a full-distance Appleseed, so he can learn to shoot it like the GIs did when it was built.

He'll be ok. He already has two Mausers and a Mosin. He obviously likes to take abuse, as evidenced by his choice in schools.

William, that is a beautiful and thoughtful gift to a son who is a history buff and hoplophile! Based on what you noted that he has already, good on you for your thoughtfulness of what would complement his collection/accumulation.
Looks like you know a bit about this gun's provenance, so you can pass it along to him. There are several websites that note actual manufacture dates that may be of interest. Here's one:

When I consider my Garand's manufacture date, and look at what was going on in WW2 at the time, I get nostalgic about what the guys of "the greatest generation" were facing at that time. The gun that you are giving your son truly is a piece of history...and let him know that.
