So, what happens if you keep shooting while havimg a gun with all rifling worn off?

Then you get groups like I sometimes shoot with rounds going everywhere on and around the target.

The question this article leaves me with is...how much of the barrel really needs to be rifled?

I don't know about you, but I shoot perfectly...just this darn worn out barrel making my shots go everywhere!

I was kinda wondering if the ATF would consider it a smoothbore somethingorother and have to pay a tax.

Given this article's new information, I now suspect my accuracy problems may be the result of too much rifling in my barrels. I'll work on reducing the lands, especially those closest to the chamber. I may have also been cleaning too frequently and thereby prolonging land height by not letting abrasive priming residue buildup and properly work the barrel.

Good point - hopefully it would warrant just a $5 stamp.

Wow that's very interesting, honestly that gun likely shot about the same from the factory. I would never have guess it would still shoot that well. I was reading on of Patrick Sweeny's books and he had a springfeild 1911 that was shooting 3' at 25 yards before a barrel change. There is no doubt those guys over at Pistol Training shoot a freaking TON. They done many long term, large round count, gun tests. Thanks for posting!

Good read. Hard to argue against those results.

I gave up on cleaning my stuff awhile ago. Its a PITA to clean it when I only put 200-300 round through it. Esp on days when I take anywhere between 4 and 7 weapons to the range. I only clean my carry pistol so my close stay clean and I don't smell like GSR.

Shucks..... I can do that without a special barrel.

Sooo, I wonder how that barrel would pattern snake shot compared to a new barrel.
