I just purchased my first red dot sight- one of the EO Techs. Going to take some getting used to but I like it.
I was wondering how close to zero I can expect it to hold if I detach it from the piccatinny (iPhone spell check tried to change that to "pic stinky") rail and put it back on.

I see between 0 and 2 MOA (2" at 100 yards) as long as you use the same method and mounting point.

Mount it.. Mark a reference point on the sight and rail.. Remove and mount as needed.. Good enough for social work out to 100 yds..

I can not see any change in POI when I take mine on and off. Then again, mine is old.

How is your attachment point on the rail? If you are using a QD, I don't see much of a shift if you are using the same mounting point and pressure. You might see shifts if you are using bolts and not torquing down the same way everytime. also, where is your zero? Obviously, the shift will be greater the farther out your zero is.

It is the single bolt that comes with the EOTech 512. I wouldn't call it zero'd yet. Just got it on paper at about 30yds the first time I fired it then the range closed.
I will probably zero at 100.

I learned, the hard way, about first shots at longer range. Takes a bit to get on paper when you don't know where your rounds are going.

Having sighted in many guns, scopes, RD, ....over the years there are a few tricks.

#1. Bring a BIG target.
#2. Start at a distance you can't miss the target.
#3. Setup the gun on the bench so it can not move.
#4. Shoot and adjust the sight to where the bullet impacted.

This should allow you to sight in with one shot.
