Secession Is In the Air

I'm sure someone is always talking at one time or another about secession, but I found it interesting that these three stories came across my desk so close to each other. People think that the geographical borders of the world are set in stone, but I think the world is just as volatile now as it's ever been.

Texas Railroad Commissioner Barry Smitherman is running to be the state's next Attorney General, but that is apparently just a backup plan in case his real mission fails. That mission...is to lead the Independent Nation of Texas.

And it doesn't look like the people of western Maryland like the direction the eastern part of the state is taking everyone.

Seems I heard a rumor about northern Colorado and NW Nebraska joining Wyoming.

I've been hearing these for years. The only one u heard just this year, probably didn't just start though, is northern Colorado.

Back home the eastern part of Long Island always had a minority that wanted to secede from Suffolk county to form Peconic county, and there there was even a smaller minority calling for Long Island to split off from NY and form its own state.

These things have yet to amount to anything.

Patience good people. One thing is constant in this world of ours...change.....Our states have remained the same for a long time, but that does not mean they will always be that way. After all what does Amelia county or Cumberland county have in common with Alexandria. If Alexandria, and Richmond, and Norfolk keep managing to overrule the counties of Amelia, Cumberland, and Prince George the people there are going to eventually get tired of it and tell the cities to go take a flying leap.

The same thing is happening around the nation. Rural and Suburban counties are getting the shaft from cities that are dying in their own socialism and the counties are getting tired of it.

It may not be today tomorrow or even ten years from now, but I think we will likely start to see more and more talk of this. Eventually something will give.

Saw a guy on the news this morning working on a secession movement for Western Maryland.
Not sure if all of this is just normal rhetoric or a REAL sign that people are getting fed up.
I guess the news will decide for us and tell us what to think(sarcasm).

I suspect its like that in a lot of areas, metro NY supports the rest of NY via Albany taking a lot of their money and redistributing it,

Seems to me I remember that about a half-dozen counties in southern West Virginia got so disaffected with the climate of political liberalism and corruption in that state that the agitated secession and a reunion with the Commonwealth. I seem to remember the agitation for this reached the point that the Governor of Virginia publicly stated that Virginia had no interest in the proposition. Guess it must be a tossup whether they really didn't want those 5 counties or whether they didn't want to endorse the concept in view of the people in NOVA doing all that bitching.

There has also been some loose talk for years down in these parts about breaking off counties in Southwest Virginia, Northeast (used to be called Upper East) Tennessee and Western North Carolina (and perhaps also Eastern Kentucky) to form an autonomous state due to the fact that those regions have in common that they are remote Appalachian regions with more in common with each other than with the rest of the states where they are presently located. This notion has been packaged as a reincarnation of the "lost state of Franklin" (There was an effort in the late 1700s to create a state, and then a republic of franklin in what is now eastern Tennessee). Problem with that deal is it would probably create the poorest states in the country.

I have witnessed the same thing in Europe: states dissolve and split in smaller units. Everybody talks about unity, but the reality is that more and more discrepancies are aggravated to the point of complete separation.
