I've not been all that much into "black rifles" beyond just owning one that I shoot occasionally and a couple that I bought and have never fired. I've never built or accessorized one myself. But I'm in the market for a forearm/barrel shroud for a Stag Arms Model 1 AR15 that will let me have a rail mounted on the bottom of the forearm that is stout enough to secure the rifle to a tripod or stanchion while firing. Barrel shroud on the gun now just has round holes in a thin metal shroud. I want to be able to lock it down solid. Can some of you guys who eat sleep and breathe ARs help me out?

I am no SME... but I own 3 AR's and it's all I have been dealing with for the last couple years.

Some people like Aim Sport, GMG and UTG, but in my opinion, they are heavy and cheap. I'm not a fan. Midwest is okay and about mid-priced, but not my first choice. Troy are pretty good, but you are going to pay for it.

I would free-float the barrel if you are going to use a sling, bi-pod or do any tactical training/competition past 50 yards.

Can go wrong with the free float and a Daniel defense rail. The Troy TRX rails are trendy right now but Troy as a company has down some silly things lately.

True, but the Daniel Defense 12" free floats are between $350 and $450 compared to another main stream brands such as Troy or Midwest that only cost $125-$250 depending on the rifle.

Hard to justify doubling the price or more when you look at quality of craftsmanship and materials. Compared to a $30-$60 rail system, yea... night and day. But the diff between mid and high-end isn't so obvious.

A high degree of accuracy is not required, here. But the attachment needs to be pretty robust. Weight is likewise not a big concern - within reason.

It's there if you know what you're looking for. Prices are determined by what the buyer and seller agree too. DD can charge a lot more because they have buyers willing to pay it. Also, materials, design, and mostly machining time dictate how little any manufacturer can accept and still make a profit. Just because something is made of "aircraft aluminium" doesn't mean it's high quality. Alloys and tempers (heat treating) all matter. The difficulty in machining a item and the required precision usually plays the largest part in determining it's cost due to CNC time. This is why a simple item like a muzzle break or flash hider that's made out of Inconel is ridiculously expensive. A circular rail can be easily made from tube stock with some holes cut into it, but a quad-rail interface often has to be cut from forged bar stock. More material and a *lot* more CNC time. The really cheap stuff is cast.

Now for the OP stated purpose, he doesn't need a DD quality or similar rail (unless he just wants it). A solid, free-float tube rail (e.g. Troy as previously mentioned) is going to be fine. LaRue does make a nice tripod mount, but you really don't need that if you don't mind leaving the adaptor on the rifle (the tripod has a "QD" function). http://www.laruetactical.com/larue-tact ... il-adapter.

dorminWS, to answer the question more info is needed. is your rifle a carbine (@7"handguard length), a mid-length gas system (@ 9" handguard) or a rifle (@ 12" handguard)? Is the tripod you want to mount it to a camera tripod or some other tripod type system?

If you want to keep your rifle light, look into the Magpul MOE forends. You can mount rail sections where you need them and you don't have to spend tons of cash.
