Virginia Gun Owners Forum - VGOF

I have an FR8 that is chambered in .308 Winchester/7.62 NATO. It is a big ring Mauser, so should be solid for .308 Win. That said, there's been Internet "advice" that shooting modern .308 Win may be an issue in the rifle. When I mentioned taking it back out again for hunting my wife expressed concern, and was not pleased and insisted I buy a new rifle.

Do I ignore my wife and take it back out with her, and risk her displeasure? Or do I buy a new rifle (which has been hard since most shops stock tactical stuff) and some glass so she's not mad at me? DILEMMA.

Is this satire?

I 2nd that notion.

On top of that, while old Milsurp guns can kill a deer having a scoped rifle really does help alot.

Chances are, if SWMBO said for me to buy a new gun, I'd already have it in the car or stashed in my office.

But in my personal opinion, if you guys have it set up so your wife even knows whether you've got a new gun or not, you did it wrong.

While I want to side with the others here and ask why you'd even question your wife telling you to buy another gun, it may be a trap.

I ordered a Mossberg 930 Combo just for the 28" VR barrel (to use on my existing 930 SPX) with the full and honest intention of selling the new one with just the slug barrel. When I saw how poorly a VR barrel works with the SPX rear sight, she said, "Well, just keep them both."

I said, sheepishly, "Gee, do ya think I really should?" (or something equally pathetic). IDIOT! Of course I should. And I did. Now I'm waiting for the trap to be sprung...

Don't be surprised if she buys a new dress or a fur coat to go with your new gun. SWMBO would.

I was jesting... sorta. I would like a nice rifle with some glass, but I also like this ol' gun.

Nah, she got a brand new Savage Lady Hunter and Leupold scope this weekend. No dresses or fur coats; just more ammo.

Just need to find a good un. A rifle, that is, I've got the good partner.

(shrugs) I keep all my accounts separate from my girlfriends, she has no idea about my finances, or my gun purchases because I don't mention them.

Sometimes, she'll ask "When did you get that?" To which my response is "When I got it." and the look of "REALLY!?!?"

We also keep our finances separate, but she also keeps an eye on what comes into the house. She seldom comments and my responses to her inquiries have softened a bit since she was promoted to Wife. You'll see, Rev...

Mine isn't the material type, either, but sometimes I wish she was. It won't be a fur coat - it'll be *Christmas at her parents* (again) or something much more devious and painful.

Yep. She won't mind me buying a new firearm. I just gotta be sure it remains mine!

SWMBO never did that with a gun, but she did it with my pickup truck. THEN she gave the cotton-pickin' thang to my son, because "he needed it more than she did"! She plumb lost track of the fact that it was MY damn truck.

If you had to wait more than a half of second to make a decision on this one....Better get yourself checkout ! My wife had to work Saturday and Sunday and just before she left I asked if she needed anything from Dance's. She said "Just bring me something Pretty" . So I got her a Sig 1911 .22 in Camo ....She has been Hogging my Sig every time we go out to shoot ....Now she has her own. The only comment she made was "I thought you would surprise me with that Neon Green Hoddie not another Pistol" .

I had my mind set on a Savage 14 Classic, but I can not find one in .308 Winchester. I found good deals on a Savage 11 BTH (love the thumbhole stock for my .17 HMR but not sold a thumbhole stock on a stalking rifle); a Weatherby Vanguard Series 2 Sporter; a Hawkeye; and a CZ 550.

Thoughts? Love the CZ trigger; really love the Monte Carlo stock on the Weatherby. Action on the Weatherby and the Savage Are great.

Why no Remington 700? Can't find a CDL.

Alrighty, VGOF experts....

I have narrowed it down to a Savage 14 or a Weatherby Vanguard S2 Sporter. The CZ is still in contention, but I think the former feel better.

I love my Savage rifles - the trigger is awesome, and I have not had any issues with them. I've never owned a Weatherby, but the action seems a lot smoother. Ditto the CZ. The Weatherby's Monte Carlo stock is real nice for sight picture with a scope.

Thoughts? Experiences?

I think the Weatherby Vanguard's are one of the better value buys on the market right now for a good hunting rifle. The actions are very smooth. I haven't shot one with the new S2 trigger yet though.

Savage rifles are nice too and there's a whole lot more aftermarket parts for if you ever decide to upgrade barrels, stocks, triggers, etc....

Go with what feels best in the hand.

I have been shooting several Savages lately...I'm Looking for a SS .223 . I've shot the 30.06 and .308 both are great rifles. You can't go wrong with anything Weatherby though !
