Hello VGOF!

I need to move my small safe (400lbs) from my garage to my basement (down some stairs). I didn't know if my safe was light enough to order regular movers, or if I should hire specific safe movers.

I also was looking for recommendations on good gun safe movers. Please no comments about 'doing it yourself' because I don't want to go through the trouble or risk.

After you take the guns and ammo out (and you would take them out before moving it anyway, right?) a safe is just like any other large heavy piece of furniture.

You could hire local movers to get it down the stairs for a flat fee, or hire some college students if you're the trustworthy type.

IMO this invite some friends over "for a BBQ" kind of work.

I concur with Kreutz, and mainly invite GUN OWNING FRIENDS!

When you ALL own them? You keep your BIG TRAP SHUT!

I am of the mindset of using friends who are gun owners as well. Since a DIY solution isn't a real option for you (per your post), I would say a website like SuperPages.com would be a great place to start. Not only do they have searchable lists of safe movers, you can also see reviews from past clients.

At 400 lbs, this is doable by a couple of guys (whether it's you or them). I've used a good heavy duty hand truck with straps to lower my gun safe (~600 lbs) down about five steps before. Lean it back and make sure the guy below has some Spidey-moves and you should be good.

I can move a 700lb safe by myself. Hand cart, a hydraulic jack and ratchet straps.
Empty safe of most items as when you open the door the safe can tip over. Here is the big one. Lift the door off it's hinges and move it and then move the safe. Get safe in place and put something inside so it does not tip over.
Good luck and take it slow. If going up the stairs use a moving blanket on the stairs and slide it up the stairs while someone pulls it.
