Virginia Gun Owners Forum - VGOF

Anybody know the cause of us loosing reciprocity with DE this December? I can't find anything out. I know we temporarily lost it a couple months back and it was resolved, but the DE page still showing as dropping VA this December.

Probably the fact that VA allows training to occur over the Internet.

Yep, Delaware doesn't like that Va. accepts this online crap, so they're pulling the reciprocity as of Dec. 7.

A Utah non-resident permit will still be valid in Delaware though.

I am not a big fan of the online training personally at least for new gun owners, I had a CWP in Florida 20 years ago
so I am familiar with firearms but I helped a guy at work purchase a handgun and I urged him to please take the NRA Basic Handgun Safety course.

So What other training can you get in Virginia that will have reciprocity in most states that currently reject Virginia?

We still have all the same NRA training classes and schools that everybody else has, in fact probably more so as we're such a gun friendly state. It's just that we have the option of the online training class. When I moved to VA from Boston I took the online class when I applied for my VA permit because I assumed VA wouldn't take my NRA cert from MA (MA only accept's certs from within the state) so I assumed everywhere did it that way. But had it with me even here the cop wasn't too keen on the online cert, I actually had my NRA cert with me and said "I also did this one" he goes "oh, good!" took that one and threw the other one out! So even here some aren't fans. But honestly the online thing went over all the same stuff, actually more. Just no hands on.

I like you would recommend to a newbie to take a real course for the hands on, but like I said in another post, people get masters degrees online these days, a basic safety course really shouldn't be too big of a deal.

People on this forum talk all the time about how gun safety is so easy if you practice a few common-sense rules, so what's so bad about an online class that goes over those rules? There was even a lot of banter about the new Illinois requirements of 16 hours of training before getting a new permit and 3 hours of training just to renew. The Constitutionalists in us will say that there is no training requirement mentioned in the second amendment and those states that do practice constitutional carry have no training requirement, so again, what gives?

I did the online class and it went over the same stuff I've learned on this forum or in any other classroom. When I want to expand on that knowledge with practical range time and techniques I'll take one of Jim's classes.

The Utah permit class would be a good option.

For me it was not a big deal, I have been shooting since I was 9 years old, I was the Nebraska State Skeet shooting Champion in my age group at 11 years old. Firearm safety was drilled into me at an early age... I to this day will not even hand over a cap gun to someone unless the breech/chambers are checked. even water guns must be empty I never would buy my son a BB gun, he got a .22 and recently (he turned 21) we got him a Taurus pt92
and I am waiting for a Smith & Wesson M&P 15 to come in. It's all about teaching gun responsibility, how to handle it, always point it in down range, NEVER put your finger on the trigger until your ready to fire it; even if you think it's not loaded.. Always treat a firearm as loaded.. this is basic stuff but I find it amazing how many people do not follow these basic rules.

I go back to my co-worker.. Last year he was so anti-gun; I took him to the range one day because his neighbor was shot by a home intruder last October. (he was an anti-gun type.. bumper stickers on his Prius said so) why I believe he was a target. but this scared my co-worker and he wanted to learn. Range time he did everything wrong even though I went over the rules before hand. He had a good time and even said he was "So miss-informed" about guns. I agreed to train him before he purchased the firearm but urged him to take the NRA Course, he did and again came away with a whole different attitude about guns and the NRA.. He had always believed that the NRA was the Boogie man and a danger to society. he again said he was wrong. Here is a Liberal (Obama Supporter) who now is a NRA Member and owns a pistol for home protection and most important he now questions liberalism.

Sorry I got of in a tangent but my point is that even thought I went over the rules he still broke them minuets later.
