I recently picked up a 1944 Izhevsk M44 Mosin Nagant Carbine. I am enjoying the hell out of this rifle. I love when it goes boom!

I am not too familiar with those (I'm a newb). What round is it chambered for?

It is 7.62x54R. I am shooting Russian surplus ammo through it.

most, if not all of that stuff is corrosive. With the high humidity summer, make sure you are cleaning well, and soon after shooting.

Yep, I hear that I should treat any ammo for it as corrosive, just to be safe. I bring some windex with me just to spray down the barrel real quick after shooting it. Then when I get home, I clean it right away.

Avoid putting any household cleaners on or in your rifle. Pickup a Hoppes Bore Snake at your local gun shop or online and pull that through the barrel. Look for a bore snake in .30 caliber size.

How come? I see that a lot of people use windex to help clean the salts out of the barrel. When I used the windex, I was at a range in NH. I live in MA currently... and I wouldn't get home until at least 2 hours afterwards so I sprayed the windex through to clean what salts I could out of the barrel. Then when I got home, I used Hoppes and cleaned it the right way

Windex is mostly water and ammonia. Which one of those is going to be beneficial?

The purpose of a bore snake is to draw out corrosive residue until you can clean the bore in a proper fashion.

remember that the surp ammo tins with the number 10 in a circle on them are the steel core boat tails which are the nicest of the bunch.

Woudn't ammonia be at least as corrosive as the salts and perhaps more so? It's pretty nasty stuff.

There is no need to do all that at the range.

Think about how they were used in the field when they were issued. They didn't clean 10 min after firing... and of day generally.

and they didn't throw it back into the armory uncleaned either.

Reasonable advice for the new owner too.

The Silver Tipped 149 grain Boat Tail bullet in this ammunition is unique in that it has a steel shank in the center of the projectile beneath an exterior coating of lead that is bonded to the bullet jacket. This allows the projectile to stabilize in flight and provides the accuracy and penetration of a steel core round while not being harsh on the barrel or bore as is the case with a full hardened steel core. It is the absolute best of both worlds.

maunfactured in the early 70's through the 80's in either Bulgaria and Russia

There is a kick to it but that's the fun part Absolutely not, I am going to keep it as is. I love the wood stock on it.

Cool, thanks for the info. I still have the lid to my can; I just looked and there is no circled "10" on it. Boo. And thanks for the link... I currently cannot buy ammo online since I still live in Massachusetts. Almost no one will ship ammo to MA.

My in laws live there.. but I don't want to crap up their place with my stuff! I'm likely moving down in October... I'll just wait
