Reading things like this is what got me re-interested in firearms. Not that I ever lost interest; it just slid lower on the priority chain for a while.

That is why I carry my gun on my hip even when I'm home. I don't want to have to go looking for my gun and hope I make it. They got lucky. Keep it on you.

It’s funny how things have a way of coming up. Yesterday it was in the papers that a guy had escaped from the Sheriff while being transported from the Courthouse back to the regional jail. This happened at the County Seat 5 or 6 miles away from my house. Last night he hadn't been apprehended yet. He had been in jail for breaking into an elderly couple's home, beating them severely, and robbing them. Made me think about the fact that I'm no spring chicken any more and I have some physical limitations due tosome pretty extensive spinal surgeries. Made me feel a little vulnerable, to tell the truth. So I started taking stock of my situation. After contemplating the very stylish mostly leaded glass back door SWMBO decided some years ago (based solely upon aesthetic considerations) was befitting our station in life and realizing that even though it was pretty to look at, it was pitifully lacking in security, I just got a bad feeling that this guy would almost surely pass through our town on his way home. I loaded a second 1911 and placed it on top of the computer armoire within easy reach of my recliner in the den; from which I can easily cover the door in question. This was in addition to the one I keep beside my BIPAP mask in the bedroom upstairs. I cautioned SWMBO about going out alone, particularly after dark; and she actually heeded my advice (more or less). I actually hauled her to the supermarket and the local produce stand last evening so she wouldn't be alone. I didn't tell her about my extra firearms-related precautions because I didn't want to have to listen to her worry out loud about it all evening. This morning, I read in the paper that the fugitive had been recaptured right here in our town; which left me wondering just how close he was when I had my premonition.

Your post that you carry even at home therefore struck a chord with me. I've said a lot of times that I live in a part of the world where people are more secure in their homes and among their neighbors; and that is true. But this episode with the escapee demonstrates that once in a blue moon, a nasty stranger can come around. I'd say a lot of us who keep a loaded gun in the home don’t keep it handy enough to lay hands on it in time if someone kicked down the back door. This is (and ought to be, I guess) a sobering thought for a broke-down old cripple like me; because I'm too old and stove up to either fight OR run. Brings home the notion that I might need to be better prepared for adverse turns of events, and that I need to break the lifelong habit of assuming as I did when I was younger and more fit that I can handle whatever happens while I'm downstairs and awake bare-knuckled.

Kinda reminds me of a quote from that movie Act of Valor

" Before my father died, he said the worst thing about growing old was that other men stopped seeing you as dangerous. I've always remembered that, how being dangerous was sacred, a badge of honor. You live your life by a code, an ethos. Every man does. It's your shoreline. It's what guides you home. And trust me, you're always trying to get home."

I'm not home much, and state laws being what they are (along with company policy) so I don't get to carry much.

However, when I WAS home every day, I always had my gun on me, even though I was in a low crime area. I was also in a high-finance area, too, you see. I figured that were I felonious in nature, that would be a great area for robbing.

So, kept a pistol on the hip, and a shotgun within reach. One never knows who may float through.
