"It was obvious from the way I handled the gun that I knew nothing about firearms. Tony sold it to me anyway. The whole thing took 7 minutes. As a gratified consumer, I thought, “Well, that was easy.” Then the terrifying reality hit me, “Holy hell, that was EASY.” Too easy. I still knew nothing about firearms."

As someone with an Asian mother... have you ever been car shopping?

Well she's awful smart, walking around with something she knows nothing about, even how to make it safe.

She complains cause the gun dealer sold a gun to someone that knew nothing about them. You can walk into any hardware store and buy a machete or a chainsaw even if you don't know how to use it. Why should a gun be any different, its a tool. Is she trying to say its the governments job to protect us from our own stupidity???

It would be interesting to see if that as a person with no drivin experience, Ms Yewman would buy a car and jump behind the wheel.

I'll betcha $5 agin' a good dry horseturd that if the same gal tried to buy a diaphragm or some condoms (or that morning after pill) and they asked her if she was married and had any business with them, she'd hit the roof and raise all kinds of hell about it being be her absolute right to have unrestricted access to those items without question or qualification.

As for the point of her article (granting, very charitably and purely for the sake of argument, that she HAD one) she proved only that SHE is too stupid to be allowed to buy a gun; not that I am.

She also ignored the obvious fact that she was qualified to purchase in spite of her gun phobia, which does not qualify as a mental illness. But for the fact that she is trying to make a political point, she would never have exercised her right to buy a gun. So the fact that she could buy a gun she was scared sh!tless of is purely due to the fact that she WANTS to put herself and her kids at risk just to prove it is possible if one acts irrationally. HMMMM ... maybe we DO need to screen more vigilantly for mental illnesses. Obviously, they missed hers. We need to classify fear of firearms as a mental illness.

The buzz on Twitter is that Heidi Yewman fabricated the story.

She's just following the Bloomberg / Brady Bunch play book. If you tell a lie enough times it becomes truth.

Week Two: Heidi Yewman realizes that she is just a helpless female and unable to defend herself, so she surrenders her legally-purchased handgun to police.

Film at eleven.

I posted the following to Ms Magazine's Facebook page about the story:

Wait a moment, Ms Magazine. She says she has a concealed weapon permit, for which she paid $56.50, which jives with her work in Idaho. In that case, she was required to demonstrate competence with the weapon, either thru taking a class, or being ex-military or law enforcement. (http://www.ag.idaho.gov/ - the attorney general's web site in ID.)
In another Ms Magazine article, it says her home is Washington State, as does http://gunvictimsaction.org/boards-of-d ... ashington/. The fee there is $52.50. If she made a simple typo, I'd accept it, but there's a waiting period in WA due to the background check (RCW 9.41.070).
Washington does not have reciprocity with Idaho so that's not an explanation of the discrepancy.
"Tony told me a Glock doesn’t have an external safety feature, so when I got home and opened the box and saw the magazine in the gun I freaked." Really? Every gun shop I have been to - EVERY one - clears the gun, shows the customer it's clear, ensures the customer clears the gun. Every one, every time.
Why did she go to a police officer if she was so scared, instead of to "Tony", who is four miles from her home?
"a woman with absolutely no firearms training and a Glock on her hip", "shaking" - if she was shaking and that scared, she should not have been driving, either. Why didn't she go get training, or talk to someone that knows guns, like 99.999% of gun owners?

This "story" is full of holes. It reads more like a work of fiction to anyone that knows anything about firearms. It's designed to spread fear through emotion. There's an agenda, and it's clearly visible in that any questions about validity of the story are not approved or deleted from the story on your web site.

7 minutes? That's impressive. It always takes me a couple hours to get out of a gun shop. Especially if I'm buying because I have to admire all of their inventory first then compare all of my options even if I know what I am going to end up with.

I have NEVER been able to buy a gun in minutes. In fact, I almost always have to come back the next day, because my "instant" background check always hits a delay. I am a military officer and former federal agent, so my background has been pretty thoroughly checked already. What a brilliant system!

Last gun I ought from an FFL the check came back OK almost instantly, I suspect it helps to have a unique name?

Mine's fairly uncommon. I've heard that folks with security clearances get extra scrutiny, but I don't know. Seems to me we already got more scrutiny than most -- not sure why any more is warranted.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I reckon I must have bought guns in as little or less time as anybody. I either go in to get what I already know I want (and usually have ordered) or see/am shown something that I decide I can't do without. In either case, no time is wasted hemming and hawing around about what and/or whether to buy. The purchase decision is either made in advance or lightning fast on the fly. The background check is usually approved before I can get the federal form filled out after I have filled out the Virginia form and handed it to the Man; whereupon he immediately enters it into the system. There are even pre-prepared copies of my DL and CHP on hand for each occasion. We've done it enough times to have the process pretty well streamlined.

But 7 minutes is damned fast, and the claim smacks of hyperbole at best and probably of outright prevarication. As I see it, that "ploop-splatter" sound you heard when you read that gal's 7-minute story was bullsh!t hitting the pasture.
