Thank you for contacting me about our nation's immigration system. I appreciate hearing from you.

The United States takes great pride in being a nation of immigrants. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2010, Virginia was home to 911,119 immigrants, who comprised 15% of the state's workforce. Immigrants are an integral part of our founding, culture, society, and economy. The skills and talents that they bring are critical in assuring that our country continues to lead in world-class innovations in competitive areas such as science, medicine, and technology.

At the same time, the United States takes great pride in being a nation of laws. While we welcome immigrants of all backgrounds, we must ensure that they follow our rules. People wishing to visit, work, or live in the United States must do it through legal and transparent channels so that we know who is in our country. Our borders need to be respected and enforced to prevent further illegal immigration, and to halt the importation of illegal drugs that end up on our streets.

I am encouraged by the bipartisan Border Security, Economic Opportunity and Immigration Modernization Act introduced by Senators Schumer, McCain, Durbin, Graham, Menendez, Rubio, Bennet and Flake. This proposal strengthens border security, creates a pathway to citizenship for millions of undocumented immigrants following compliance with various requirements, helps reunite families, improves our visa programs, and creates a better system for companies to verify the immigration status of their employees. I am especially encouraged by the expedited green card process for young people who were brought here at a young age and have only known this country as home.

It has been more than 25 years since the last major reform bill was signed into law. In the coming months, I look forward to debating this measure and enacting into law a bipartisan solution reflective of our American identity - a nation of immigrants and a nation of laws.

Please be assured that I will keep your views in mind as Congress continues to debate immigration reform. Thank you once again for contacting me.

Tim Kaine

NO doubt where Kaine stands,, He needs to show where Nation of immigrants is in the Constitution though,,

Kaine needs to be reminded that "nation of immigrants" means LEGAL immigrants. I'd like to ask him which federal laws I can break with impunity and the knowledge that if I hold out long enough, I will be pardoned/receive amnesty.
