“I made some big mistakes and I know I let a lot of people down, but I have also learned some tough lessons,” Weiner says in the video, posted on YouTube.

The Wiener and Sanford cases are not at all comparable, and attempting to draw a moral equivalence is the kind of BS tactic that I would expect from the extreme left-wing of the Democrats. There is a mile of difference between an extra-marital affair and making a habit of tweeting photos of one's junk to near-strangers.
Wiener's candidacy, backed of course by the full resources of his party, is yet more proof that character means nothing to the Democrats as long as "their man" is a reliable party hack. Even better if he is an attack dog with naturally bitter invective against their opposition, and still better if he is a protegé of Chuck (You) Schumer.

In any event, he'd probably be a step up. The thing is Wiener may be a typical sucky Democrat, but he does have my respect for leading the charge to get the 9/11 first responders their due.

Leaving your state to say you're off hiking while you're really out of the country having an affair - immoralFiremanBob wrote:The Wiener and Sanford cases are not at all comparable, and attempting to draw a moral equivalence is the kind of BS tactic that I would expect from the extreme left-wing of the Democrats. Taking pictures of your junk and showing them off on Twitter - immoral
Seems pretty comparable to me. You can slice and dice the shades of gray all you want, but it should be pretty obvious that neither of these people should be running for office. But hey, in the end the American people don't care. We've had presidents that smoke weed in the past while cracking down on everyone else for doing the same thing, a House speaker impeaching a president for lying about cheating on his wife while the speaker is cheating on his wife, and many more examples. We are the country where the standards to hold office are so low, you can trip over them.
Now this I agree on. Whether it's a Todd Akin saying something horrible or a Sanford coming back to run for office, the Republicans as of late have been more vocal in holding back their support than the Dems who seem to forgive and forget after the standard 12 month waiting period.FiremanBob wrote:Wiener's candidacy, backed of course by the full resources of his party, is yet more proof that character means nothing to the Democrats as long as "their man" is a reliable party hack. Shotgun, it is important to state the facts correctly. Clinton was impeached for committing the crime of perjury while testifying under oath, not for cheating on his wife. Newt Gingrich did not commit perjury.
And yes, the relative darkness of the shades of gray is relevant; moreover, Wiener vs. Sanford is not merely an issue of where each falls on the same continuum. There is a genuine, qualitative difference between them. Sanford's lie about his whereabouts was dishonest. But Wiener's behavior was perverted, prurient, and disgusting. How low-class can someone be and still be lifted to a position of public trust?

I seem to be in a minority, but having a secret affair (especially when you're married with four kids) I would consider perverted, prurient, and disgusting.FiremanBob wrote: And yes, the relative darkness of the shades of gray is relevant; moreover, Wiener vs. Sanford is not merely an issue of where each falls on the same continuum. There are already quite a few examples of this, particularly in DC government, but after the election, we may have a new perspective. How low-class can someone be and still be lifted to a position of public trust?

IMO they are both just as slimy. Weiner creeps me out a little more for sending pics of his parts to people......eeewww!
But I am hoping he is not as tyrannical and narcissistic as bloomberg is.

Which is why I said "a House speaker impeaching a president for lying about cheating on his wife" (sorry I didn't make it obviously clear to everyone when I omitted the words "under oath"). You're getting hung up on the legality of that situation (which also contained an immoral act) when this whole conversation is about immoral acts. Stick to one or the other will ya? And yes, Newt didn't commit perjury, but he did commit an immoral act by cheating on his wife, then has the nerve to run for president under a party that espouses "conservative family values".FiremanBob wrote:Shotgun, it is important to state the facts correctly. You can whitewash all you want the doings of the Republicans (like how you just mention Sanford's lie about his whereabouts while completely ignoring the fact that he left the country to have an affair with another woman), but many people in any party would also consider that perverted, prurient, and disgusting. And he's going to run for office (and win!) on a party that espouses "conservative family values"? No wonder the Republicans rightly denied him support for his race, but the American people don't care about past transgressions. For better or for worse, the American public has lost all sense of holding elected officials to a higher standard. No wonder we're getting the government that we have.
Whether someone is cheating on their spouse, soliciting gay sex in an airport bathroom stall, showing pictures of their junk on social media, or doing drugs with hookers in hotel rooms, all you have to do is ask yourself "is that what I want my elected official doing?" and you get a simple yes/no answer without needing all of the shades of gray or partisan whitewash. In my opinion, if the answer is no regardless of party that person shouldn't be running for office.

Wiener, as a tool of the extremist Democrat party, would make Bloomberg look like Calvin Coolidge by comparison.

In that committing a long-running extramarital affair with misused tax-payer funds is grievously worse than sending creepy pics of yourself to random women online?FiremanBob wrote:The Wiener and Sanford cases are not at all comparable
Part of my disdain for the GOP is their marked hypocrisy in the "family values" arena...and their closing ranks around the offenders.
The Dems at least have the honesty to proudly proclaim myriad sexual deviances and then embrace 'em.
