VA-ALERT: VCDL mini-update 9/9/09

Post by OakRidgeStars »

----------------------------------------------------------------------
VCDL's meeting schedule: http://www.vcdl.org/meetings.html
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Abbreviations used in VA-ALERT: http://www.vcdl.org/help/abbr.html
----------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Time to contact Congress about another Obama anti-gun czar!
2. Keep those calendars marked for Saturday, October 17th in Richmond
3. Going to DC Saturday? Knife law tips for the District
4. Gun shows and events!

**********************************************************
1. Time to contact Congress about another Obama anti-gun czar!
**********************************************************

Obama's "regulatory czar", who will head things like the BATFE, is yet
another person who does not like guns and we must tell Congress that
we don't want him. Here is a link to the Gun Owners of America site
where you can easily get the message to our two Senators, Warner and
Webb:

http://capwiz.com/gunowners/issues/aler ... ake+Action

**********************************************************
2. Keep those calendars marked for Saturday, October 17th in Richmond
**********************************************************

Details will be coming soon, but our protest of the Republican Party's
7th District is taking on a life of its own and you are not going to
want to miss it! Plan on being in Richmond that Saturday afternoon.

**********************************************************
3. Going to DC Saturday? Knife law tips for the District
**********************************************************

EM Patt Webb sent this email on our EM email list:

--

...I have checked on the knife laws. It appears that pocket knives
with blades 3 inches or less are permitted. This info may be useful
to others going to the 9/12 march.

District of Columbia - § 22-4514 (b) No person shall within the
District of Columbia possess, with intent to use unlawfully against
another, an imitation pistol, or a dagger, dirk, razor, stiletto, or
knife with a blade longer than 3 inches, or other dangerous weapon.

--

Also EM Dale Welch noted that for blades longer than 3 inches, the DC
Court of Appeals in Barbara Harper v. United States quoted McBride v.
United States:

"The government must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the
defendant has the 'intent to use [the weapon] in a assaultive or
otherwise unlawful manner.' Although PPW [possession of a prohibited
weapon] does 'not require evidence of an attempt to do harm,' such an
attempt may provide evidence of the defendant's unlawful intent."

Of course the police could still arrest you if the knife blade is
longer than 3 inches and make you go to court. That would be
disgraceful, but possible nonetheless.

**********************************************************
4. Gun shows and events!
**********************************************************

As an all volunteer organization, VCDL depends on YOU to volunteer
your time at our area events, where we recruit new activists and keep
gun owners informed. No experience necessary; if it's your first time
we'll pair you with a veteran volunteer. To find out more about
helping at our gun show tables, go to:

Thanks for posting, Jay.

Please take note of item #1.

Also, if you use the GOA form and link I think the congressional servers now have a filter that may block it. I strongly recommend you send the letter to them directly. You can find a copy here http://vagunforum.net/national-politics ... t1811.html

Scroll down a little on that page and you will see the GOA letter.

Along the left hand side of this page, look under "Political Action" - click on the senators link - fill out the form - cut and paste the letter - click submit - do it for both senators.

Do the GOA form too, but I would DEFINITELY send the letter directly using the form on each senators page. Many of us have received e-mails from them about using 3rd party means such as a GOA form to send e-mail. I'm guessing they could be ignoring those. I would hate for a bunch of us to send through the GOA form only to have it hit the bit bucket.

Jay - if you are so inclined, I would be curious to hear an opinion about use of 3rd party servers from VCDL. I can dig up one of the e-mails I've gotten if you like.

The Senate voted last night to stop debate and go to a full vote TODAY!!, SEND THEM TODAY if you have objection to giving this nut job one of the top adviser jobs to Obama and his court.GOA assures that their stuff does get there according to a response by one of their guys in DC who monitors those things ,, Supposedly they won;t respond in kind to a 3rd party sender for fear of infecting the Senate mail system or some such nonsense,,,,,,, I usually send both myself as an in case CYA<<

Ok, I found that they did end debate yesterday but I see nothing as of 5:40 PM that they voted or not so there is still time.

Send those letters quick. Already done mine.

Just to correct the record, the "Regulatory Czar" position which Cass Sundstein (sp) is nominated for is an old position within the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) called OIRA: Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs. It is not a new position and calling him a "Czar" is not quite accurate since the position has been around a while and not something the Deceiver-in-Chief has created. Fortunately he has no statutory control of any of the law enforcement agencies, to include the BATFE. It is just a policy position. Nonetheless, he is still a bad dude.

You are partially correct. I had read somewhere it was a new position, but it did previously exist and wasnt created by obama. You are somewhat incorrect in the rest of your statement. OMB is the executive office's control arm for the government and does indeed have broad influence over many matters. They can indeed exert influence over many of government agencies with some exceptions. I know since working as a DOD employee in the pentagon we are required to comply with and answer to many OMB directives and regulations in areas beyond personnel and budget.
