Virginia Gun Owners Forum - VGOF

My grandfather passed many years ago and his .357 magnum revolver, as part of his estate, was passed on to my mother. She wants to give it to me, but I am unaware of the laws surrounding such a transfer. Also, were she to ship it to me, I assume that it would have to be from FFL to FFL (especially since she lives in California). Anyone have any guidance as to the applicable regulations. I have a VA CCW if that makes a difference.

As for your question... I'm not really sure what your best option is. Might be worth discussing it with an FFL to see what their take is.

It seems like a simple FFL to FFL transfer would be appropriate.

Here's a link to CA Bureau of Firearms. Scroll down to the bottom for info on shipping. I didnt see anything jump out about shipping out of CA but you might find a clue there. IMO you should probably do an FFL transfer. That way you dont put anyone or the pistol in jeopardy. One thing I would recommend: That your mother is in legal possession of the pistol IAW CA law. It would be no good for her to go down to the local gun store to do an FFL transfer only to find out she's not in legal possession. Having said that, it could be possible for her to ship directly to an FFL. Not sure about sending HG through FEDEX, but the pages below might help. Good luck. Btw IANAL.
