Many believe that the future of printing is in 3D, which enables companies and even novices to design whatever they want and "print" it into a real-world device.
Now, a group has a proof-of-concept that such a dream could be a reality. Only this device is a gun.
Defense Distributed, a Texas-based group working toward nonprofit status, has given Forbes images of what is being called the world's first 3D-printed handgun. The gun is capable of firing standard handgun rounds and is made entirely of plastic, except for a nail that's being used as a firing pin and a six-ounce piece of steel that's designed solely to allow the gun to be detected by metal detectors.
Cody Wilson, head of Defense Distributed, announced plans to produce a 3D-printed gun last year. It took just eight months for Wilson and others in Defense Distributed to produce the gun they call the "Liberator."

According to Forbes, the gun is capable of connecting to different barrels, allowing for various calibers of ammunition. After the organization can ensure that it's working properly, it plans to publish the CAD files and details on its mechanics to its Web site to share with the public.
rest at link. No pics though, would love to see video of a test fire and the load used.

Edit: Found a pic

Ugly little thing, reminds me of those little guns the Allies dropped into France and such.

As if the 3D printed AR wasn't a game changer. This is game over for gun control.

And he says it's not a one shot deal! Awesome the guy is not just a trouble maker he has legitimate design talent.

They say that neccessity is the mother of invention. I believe that desire, or perhaps even laziness, can play a role, too. (Because, remote control window shades, refrigeraters that order your food for you? Really? Not neccessary)

At any rate, those who want projectile hurling weaponry will have such things, even if they have to make it themselves.

I'm sure the name Liberator wasn't chosen without reference to this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FP-45_Liberator

I've been waiting for someone to do this. It's one thing to print the registered parts to an existing design (like the UT Austin student), but to really use the technology you need to design a 3D printed gun from the ground up to be optimized for the materials. Good for them.

It must be a good gun, Chuck Schumer already wants to ban it.

During the test shoot the test with a .380 round did fine then they shot a higher power round and blew up the gun. My question, besides the issue of spending a lot of money to buy a 3D printer to make a single shot gun, how much liability is this company going to end up with? If a prohibited person wants to buy a gun there are cheaper ways to get one that will work a lot better than this one. A non-prohibited person can certainly get a much better gun for much much less money. Neat demo but pretty useless.
