$h!t like this just absolutely pisses me off on SOOOO many levels. If they were older, I would chalk it up to Darwinism and let it go. This just reeks of irresponsibility.

"It's just one of those crazy accidents."
My ass. Stuff like this doesn't help our cause at all.

Here's a crazy idea. What if we could teach children gun safety at school? I mean, that could be a good thing, right?
I guess not.

The word "accident" implies that nothing could have been done to prevent what happened. The mother thinks this was just some crazy accident? What a moron.

Well, we all know how guns are. You put them on the kitchen table and turn your back, then the next thing you know they start shooting up children and puppies.
Maybe a smaller capacity magazine clip thingy would help.

I keep telling my family and friends that as long as you follow a few basic safety rules you should be ok.
It's pure laziness when you can't even bother to check to see if the gun is loaded or put a lock on the gun (if needed).

Prosecute the parents. No excuse for this.

Darn these people! Teach your kids and keep your guns away from their casual contact till they are of age.

Poor training on the part of the parent. Guns were kept unlocked and within reach of children for years. Children should be taught about shooting safely from the time they start speaking and walking, if not sooner.

the 4 rules/safe handling, absolutely. Shooting? Prolly a smidge older than that as it's Kinda hard if they can't hold the firearm or pull the trigger. LOL

Lol, yes Gene, of course. But, as soon as they can hold a small .22, and reach everything alright, get 'em started.

Oh no
My heart goes out to the family for their loss, poor little girl. Stupid parents for not checking and double checking. Stupid parents for not teaching their children about guns.

So horribly sad, and so wrong on so many fronts:
1. Leaving any gun accessible to 2 & 5 year old kids.
2. Leaving any gun except a designated home defense weapon loaded
3. Not checking a gun to see if it is loaded
4. Having a gun in the house that you don’t know if it is loaded
5. Leaving a 2 and 5 year old unsupervised for any amount of time gun or no gun
6. Letting these morons reproduce to begin with.
I guess it is a form of Darwinism. If you are too stupid to not get your kids killed, it is the same in the long run as not living to reproduce. I guess that sounds cold, but it sounds true to me, too.
Damn! Having learned that my daughter’s 3rd (and last) child is to be her 3rd girl and there will be no grandson for me to teach how to shoot, chew terbakker and cuss, I just yesterday ordered a little pink-stocked Cricket myself. Hope SWMBO and my daughter don’t see this story.

What a terrible tragedy, and though the parents were majorly negligent in this, my prayers go out to this family. Many times my own stupidity, had it not been purely by the grace of God, could have resulted in tragedy.
Young parents, probably never learned proper gun safety themselves, which is obvious by the fact that she thought there was nothing wrong with leaving a rifle in the corner around children. Beginning in Elementary school, we teach kids about sex, and we have the D.A.R.E program to teach kids to resist peer pressure about drugs, alcohol, smoking, and other risky activities. What about teaching gun safety n the schools. I'm not saying we should let the schools take kids out shooting - although that's not a bad extracurricular activity - but just basics. We could teach them that they are not to touch a weapon unless they are under the supervision of a parent, always treat a weapon as if it is loaded, always point it in a safe direction, keep your finger off the trigger, and that weapons should be properly secured at all times, meaning if it's not under direct control of the owner, it should be locked away, not sitting in the corner.

Sounds like criminal negligence on the part of the parents to me. Then again... if the 5 year old was "used to shooting the gun" it sounds like premeditated murder.

You can't call it "Darwinism" when an innocent little kid is shot by an equally innocent little kid. Whether the five-year-old had shot before or not is irrelevant; kids that age do not have the cognitive capacity to understand logical relationships between their actions and potential consequences, nor do they fully understand the concept of permanence.
If the mother had been shot, I'd be tempted to say Darwinism -- except that wouldn't consider the terrible burden that the kid would feel for the rest of his life after shooting his mother.
Who the f*** keeps a gun in "a corner" when there are kids in the house? Mom and/or Dad need some quality time with the criminal justice system.

The Statists will never stand for it because fear and propaganda doesn't work so well on the educated.

Not to mention the organizations that do these training programs are viewed as "the enemy".
Earlier this week, KTRH told you exclusively that two HISD schools, Peck Elementary and the Martin Luther King Early Childhood Center, were going to host the NRA’s Eddie Eagle Gun Safe Program for a visit to teach kids about gun safety.
Shortly after KTRH aired that report, both visits were canceled by the schools.
