Can attach a copy of my hunting license as proof of my competency with handguns on the form to get a concealed carry permit?

Note: I do not wish to hear about needing training or anything of the sort!

See 18.2-308, http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504 ... d+18.2-308, section P1 for the list of acceptable safety/competance training. It doesn't list 'hunting license', per se but rather, completion of an approved hunter safety course. I'm not a hunter, but does getting a hunting license require the safety course and do you get a certificate for completing it? If so, that certificate seems like it would serve.

Well I recently attained a hunting license via having previously holding one in another state. Since that state required that I be born after a certain date to obtain the license I needed no class anywhere. So can the liscense be used as proof?

Wait a minute....

You got a hunting license in Virginia, because you had a hunting license in another state, and that state gave you a license without any kind of hunter safety class? And now you want to use your Virginia license to get a CHP? Am I understanding you correctly?

The hunting course is free and qualifies as training for the CHP. Drawback is it takes 9 hours and I am not sure how often it is offered. Many gun stores, shooting ranges, gun shows, offer training sufficient to get the CHP. If you are a former member of the armed forces with a honorable discharge, your discharge papers can serve as proof as well. If all that fails you there is at least one on-line course that will also work. VA requires a gun safety course but no shooting. The final fallback is to convince the County clerks office that you have sufficient experience without having one of the approved training certificates. Never heard of somebody succeeding in talking the clerk into approving the application without one of the approved training certificates but it might be done.

I've been shooting since I was a child, I don't have time for their bureaucratic games. I know how to handle a gun, I know how and when to use it, and I know how to hunt and kill an animal. So yeah I'm looking to use loop holes in the law to obtain what I want, which I wouldn't if they freaking offered the dang classes conviently. So what?

What do you consider to be inconvenient as far as taking a class?

Looks pretty convenient, probably could satisfy the requirement in the time it has taken you to read this topic and make your responses.

These type of courses seem perfect for someone like you who has plenty of experience and just needs a certificate to make the clerks office happy.

Take the class. It's very valuable to understand the SD laws of VA if nothing else.

If I recall correctly, I think that you can take the hunter safety class online, for free.
