Nice setup. Whenever my paperwork comes through I'll have a G21 w/TiRant. Now go make some noise...er, soft noises.

What paperwork do you need for a "I want to be nice to everyone's ears at the range" addition to a pistol/rifle?

Thanks JD,
That was enough for a google search. Found a good PDF on it. Not sure it's up to date as the ATF links are broken.

http://www.silencerresearch.com/Silencerguide.pdf

Had to do google searches on the forms to get to the ATF page that have the forms. The ATF web site isn't so easy to navigate to forms on the subject. Hum.

So from looking at this, I don't suppose I can make my own silencer or may I? I may make my own receiver and it doesn't appear that a silencer is "illegal" just that you need a tax on it and must meet requirements for said tax.

You may... you fill out a form 1, and send your plans/designs in to ATF... 6-8 months later, you should get approved, then you can start building it.

Unless you're a gifted engineer, with tools, and some mad skills, its going to be hard to beat the commercial offerings that are available.

They aren't. You just have to pay the tax, and go though the background check first... and the dreaded wait.

Not an engineer but I play one on TV...

I know I could screw the pooch by not having a clear path for bullet flight but I do love tinkering around with stuff. Plus silencers seem to be about the price or more of a lot of guns.

Sorry but one more question. Seems that there is talk online that VEPR's of both 1 and 2 models, sight types, have left and right handed threads. Am I violating 922 if I remove the cap but don't have anything on the threads? I know it won't "look good" to law enforcement but not sure if it's a true offense.

Good gravy all this work and money just to be nice to everyone's ears at the range. I know I always thought silencers were only for killers till I started going to the range. So I don't blame the population. I blame us not educating on why a quieter weapon is an "environmentally friendly" one. LOL, bet that made some hippies turn in their graves...

yes.... it would now be a non-sporting config because of high-cap mag, and the PRESENCE of a threaded muzzle. DOn't have to have anything on it, just the threads are the offense.

and this would be a whole lot better, if you were not running the same question in 2 different threads.

If I had it to do again I woudl set up a trust. Still thinking of doing it and transferring this one over to the trust. If you just buy one and do the form four it requires fingerprints, passport photo's and signatures from county officials. Pretty crazy really. If something were to happen to me it woudl be a pain for the estate to deal with it. With a trust there are other Identified to take control of it. You also don't have to go have a discussion with your local elected officials to get their signatures and finger prints.

A trust is the way to go.

It's a $200 tax regardless of the quality of suppressor you purchase. Unless you're doing for the learning experience why bother building you're own or buy a cheap one. It's not like you ever get the $200 back when the can is worn out.
