So in an argument with a lib at the moment. Now i know... We all know... That the "90% of Americans support background checks" is bullshit. But I'm actually having trouble finding something that says it is bullshit and why, with facts to back it up.

Anyone know of any articles or whatever that will help?

they only poll the areas where they know what the results will be.

I don't know of any website or anything where it explains why the 90% support for background checks is BS. I do know that the reason is people are asked the wrong questions. Everyone believes we need to keep guns out of criminal hands, and that if you can easily check to make sure someone is not a criminal before selling to them, then it makes sense to do so. When asked, "do you believe criminal background checks should be used to make it harder for criminals to purchase guns", the answer is usually, of course we should. Half the people polled probably don't even realize most gun sales are already subject to background checks. However, once you start throwing in the details, like requiring both parties to head downtown, fill out paperwork, and pay fees, because you want to trade your neighbor an old .22 rifle for helping you repair some loose siding, or that the checks are useless (except in hassling law abiding citizens) without a national gun registry, it all goes bad.

I bet you would have similar results in other polls. Ask a random group of people if we should make healthy food available to kids in school, and you'd probably find damn near unanimous support. Ask those same people if they support searching kids bags for sugary foods like cupcakes and soda, and fining parents who pack these things that some committee deems unhealthy, and that support starts to dwindle.

Ahhh...I did find something that might be what your looking for. I like Colin Noire. His plain spoken, common sense way of putting things makes him an excellent spokesman.

you can make numbers say whatever you want them to say. There is a complete sector of psychology that deals with how polls and surveys can be manipulated. Some ways of manipulation are getting your sample of people from a particular local that you already know thinks a certain way, another method is how you ask the questions.

But... But... Guns, vabeachman!

It is clear the public are seen as squirrels fascinated by small shiny objects (like guns) rather than big issues (economy, unemployment, economy).

Now, I need to get back finding acorns....

You are looking for the wrong thing, your response should be "Who did the survey to back up the 90% statement?" Just because the President says it, it doesn't make it true. I think you should be getting the liberal to do the work and then maybe he will learn something when he can't find it.

I am really insulted when they talk about internet and gun shows not having background checks. EVERY gun I bought over the internet or at a gun show I HAD to do a background check.

They asked:

Looked at the Gallup poll. it says that from Dec 19th to the 22nd, 92% were in favor of requiring background checks. here is the link:

It just doesn't say anything about stricter background checks.

and you can't buy a gun on ebay or craigslist. They both have policies against it.

If ebay and craigslist want to have policies against marketing firearms on their websites that is ok. That is what free markets are all about. But when I hear the antigun crowd claiming that guns can be bought over the internet and at gunshows without backgrounds checks it gets my blood a boiling. The lying propaganda they spew from their mouths is just self serving and goes to show their contempt of the Constitution.
