Yep. The wife is now "considering" how she may need to learn to shoot. Either the 1911 .45, or the "Biden on steroids" 12 gauge pump works for me. My Ruger 9 mm may be the best fit for her, but these news reports are helping her see the light.

Awesome that your wife is looking at options. My two takeaways from this are:

1. Those people are lucky the criminals let them live. They could have easily popped them after the robbery was done. I sure don't want my life in the hands of a criminal.

2. How do you defend yourself against 4 people with only 7 bullets in a magazine (I'm looking at you NY)? I'll decide what kind and how much firepower I need to defend my home and loved ones, not some politician.

I agree with what Shotgun said. I like the idea of an 18" pump. This incident also shows the importance of having immediate access to your self-defense tools at all times.

I swear to gawd! People are stupid until something happens to them, and by then, it's TOO late!

My question is how did they get in?

I am glad the family is ok, and was not harmed by these horrible people. However, I (maybe I am just more careful than some) always check who is at my door before answering and I don't let anyone in my house unless I know them or have asked them in.

Wonder how those guys got into the house in the first place. All entrances or egresses from our house are always locked. Living in a town home only 2 doors down there are locked at all times. As are the 2 windows.

I understand they could have gone in through a window. But if I hear a window break, first thing I would do is get my gun.

Like I said maybe I am just more careful, or less trusting than others. Because we are in a town home, we only open the windows that are on the second and third story. I guess with a single story home you might have windows open to let air in.

Am I strange in thinking I would have wooden blocks in the window to keep it from being pushed up more and allowing an intruder in?

Well anyway I am glad they are ok. I hope they get those crooks.

'Zactly! Also factor in the deal in NYC where the highly-trained cops fired all those shots that either missed or hit innocent bystanders when trying to stop a shooter - remember that? Makes less than two bullets per miscreant even more ridiculous by NYCPD standards of marksmanship, doesn't it? By OUR standards, it's still inadequate because it prevents the always-prudent double-tap, right?

Seven shots from my 12 G pump "may" work. Eight from the .45 "may" help, with eight more from a 9 mm and 25 from my 10/22. My guess is an 80 pound dog will at least give me some assistance as well.

But yes, locking the door is the first step in home protection.

Evidently one man knocked on the door claiming to be delivering a package (probably one that required a signature), then he and the other three men forced their way in.
Some of the new delivery companies are pretty bad as far as identification. With UPS/FedEx/USPS at least you can generally see their vehicle (uniforms are easier to fake, wouldn't trust a guy in brown shirt/shorts), but a lot of the smaller companies like Lasership are just some guy in a car with a bunch of Amazon.com boxes in the back.

Though, from my experience, you're lucky if they even ring the bell, those guys are like ninjas when they drop off my packages.

Lock the door. Turn on the alarm. Carry your gun in the house.
