NYS police departments are revoking pistol permits of those who are "blown-in" by the medical community for being prescribed anti-anxiety medications (for those who are in therapy for anxiety or depression), under the gray shroud of the UNSAFE Act. This is happening now folks, and it is likely to get worse.

They NY Safe Act apparently requires Doctors to REPORT this info.

The title on your post is not correct: the situation is worse than that.

It's not carry permits that are being revoked. In NY, you need a license to own a handgun--the license is not valid for carry, just ownership. The carry permit is a separate license and very difficult to get. I know--I grew up there.

whatever happened to doctor patient confidentiality.........without that you we are gonna have a lot of people who need help afraid to go to the doctor

Gun owners say that mental illness is the problem and guns shouldn't be in the hands of mentally ill people, but if you go after mental illness people are likely not to seek treatment. How do you fix this problem?

I would sue my doctor for breaching that trust. I guess I'll be going to the doctor now with my lawyer to make sure they never do.

Making matters worse in every situation and circumstance is the goal of this administration.

It seems to me that about half the population has been prescribed antidepressants at one time or another. That does not mean that they are mentally ill. Maybe just hit a rough patch in life. This opens up a real serious can of worms.

exactly, a can of worms........where do you draw the line as to when someone loses their constitutional right. Can a single doctor say "oh, this guy is not safe around firearms?" Should it take the same process it does to get someone committed? or can we do that anymore?
Its all part of the thought police concept, trying to prevent someone from committing a crime. Very slippery slope.

poop, if you get nervous speaking in public, you can get your doctor to prescribe Xanax to take before the presentation. Doesn't mean you're anything but afraid of speaking in public. Should that be a disqualifier?

I wonder how many active NYS LE types are suffering from PTSD or related syndromes and either (1) don't seek treatment; (2) get treated "off the books"; or, (3) will be exempted from this law for the same mystical reason that active or retired LE are exempted from other laws regarding firearms ownership and carry. What about them?

I'm all for keeping guns away from dangerous people, but unless you've been ADJUDICATED incompetent or dangerous, you should not be labeled as such. Otherwise, the police state is already here. All we need to do is make way for the reeducation camps.

I never did understand that either about retired LE being a special class of people. Why are they any better than retired military?

Because, retired LEO. it is backscratching between police orgs and politicians. politicians get to say there is support from LEO and LEO gets some bennies not available to the great unwashed.
