Ammo/firearm shortage article
Re: Ammo/firearm shortage article
Finally... A realistic viewpoint without the usual rhetoic.
Re: Ammo/firearm shortage article
Very well reasoned comments with research to back it up. This is a rare bird find these days. Thanks for sharing!

Re: Ammo/firearm shortage article
Yup! There are so many new shooters/gunowners, that in truth, I'm waiting till all this dies down, and they want to dump their guns for pennies on the dollar.
It happened when the AWB folded... It'll happen again.

There are some crazy prices being asked for used weapons. Looks to me like easily $100 or more higher than, say, last October.
Re: Ammo/firearm shortage article
I don't see anything new here. We know new gun owners are buying while they still can. They may have been thinking about it but putting it off but know time may be short. There are also speculators buying in hopes of selling dear later.
That I don't think this addresses DHS purchases or dismisses the possibility that it was for the purpose of limiting ammo and components for the rest of us.
From the article...
"You might be feeling the pinch, but it's not really some secret conspiracy to keep you from having guns or ammunition. It's the market reacting to unprecedented demand for products."
There is certainly unprecedented demand but, at least for ammo, this is certainly in no small part, due to DHS purchase of 1.6B rounds of 223 ammo.

Re: Ammo/firearm shortage article
I keep hearing about the 1.6 billion rounds that DHS and other civilian government agencies have ordered, and why that's contributing to the shortages--which are very real--but I just don't buy it. Think about the math for a second.
I shoot once or twice a month, maybe about 20 times a year in total. I go through 2000+ rounds a year--about 100 rounds a range trip. That certainly does not make me a heavy ammo user, by shooter's standards. We have 300 million plus people in the US; the NRA alone has over 4 million members, and we all know lots of shooters who aren't NRA members. If out of all those people, there are only a million who match my ammo use, that's over 2 billion rounds a year. I'm willing to bet that that's a substantial underestimate. Then recall that the DHS purchases represent multi-year contracts. They aren't buying 1.6 billion rounds a year. At most, I'm guessing, the DHS purchases come in at about 10-15% of the the annual total demand, maybe less.
Now, I'm convinced that Obama's intentions are malign, and that he is deceptive. I don't trust Napolitano at all, either. But I don't think l we need to trust them to look at the math and figure out that the DHS ammo scare stories don't add up. I can also see that all the shooters I know (including myself) are snapping up ammo whenever we can find it. Until things get back to normal, I'm not dipping into my stock--I shoot what I can buy. And I think a lot of others are doing the same. THAT is a lot of demand...
