I have a home defense and concealed carry firearm. I am now looking for a .22 for practice at the range. I want it to be full size, pretty accurate, reliable, inexpensive to moderate. I am looking for something that shoots smooth. I am used to glocks and kahrs, but am open to new choices. Awhile back shot a sig I really liked but can't remember the model, suggestions?

A Ruger Mark series or a Browning Buck Mark are the traditional solid choices. I'm also fond of the Smith and Wesson M&P 22.

The nice thing about a Ruger Mk 2 or Mk 3, or a Browning Buckmark, is that if you want to graduate into competitive bullseye shooting, you won't need yet another pistol. Get the target model with bull barrel.

Sig Sauer 1911-22..... Just saying

Does your carry piece have a 22 conversion kit? That's what I'd rather shoot instead of a completely different gun with different controls, grip, trigger, etc.

+1 on the sig 1911-22, gsg version is supposedly gtg, too. they apparently are identical except for things like the grip.

Stand alone

I acquired a Ruger Mark II Slabside Target Competition 6 7/8" barrel pistol. Cost of parts is cheap. It's not hard to replace most things. They're built like tanks. The field stripping is sequence specific so it can take a little longer than cleaning a 1911 and much longer than a striker fire/revolver.

It's exceedingly accurate. I use an Ultradot Matchdot for a sight. I had a Volquartsen trigger, sear, springs installed in it. Shoots with 2.5 lbs of break. Problem with the Mark III is that the gun will not fire unless there is a magazine in it. That makes field stripping a chore.

A lot of people like the Browning Buckmark, also.

Conversions

I have a 22 LR conversion for my Sig P220. Works more like the P220 since the frame and trigger allow to practice everything except for recoil. This shoots flawlessly.

I have an Advantage Arms 22 LR conversion for my Glock 23. I liked it so much, that I bought a dedicated G23 frame for the conversion. Sometimes, it does have a failure to extract, though.

+1 on the Ruger. I have the Mk III 22/45 with a 5" bull barrel. That thing is my favorite handgun, not least because -- until recently -- it was dirt cheap to shoot.

Ruger Mk II or III with 5.5" bull barrel. Best thing going for the money. Or a .22lr conversion, but good luck finding one of those.

Forgot to mention: I got the 22/45 for $249 at the Chantilly show a couple years back. I have certainly gotten my money's worth out of that purchase!

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately ShotgunBlast, None of my of current firearms have conversion kits. Oh darn, I guess I'll just have to get a G17 to solve that. It's a crying shame, I know. It is a staple missing our collection anyway.

$350 or less recently when you can find them in stock at one of the major dealers selling online.

I strongly recommend the Beretta Neos. It looks like a gun out of RoboCop, but it's the most accurate .22LR pistol I've fired. I have the 4" and 6" barrels for mine, and the 6" (with Burris Fast Fire III optic) lives on the pistol. Even novice shooters can consistently get 1" groups at 20 yards from a rest with this setup. Lots of fun... if you can find any .22 ammo! (it likes to feed Federal copper-jacketed 36grain, CCI MiniMags of any flavor, and Winchester bulk)

I'll throw in a vote for the M&P22. I've had one since March and have been very happy with it. Accurate, mostly reliable ( just don't shoot LRN rounds in it like I did--they hang up on feed ramp) and has one of the best out of box triggers of any of the popular .22s out there. Also has ambi controls if that matters to you (does to me as a lefty).

I love Ruger guns too but I hate the stock triggers on the 22/45s and how muzzle heavy they are. Plus the M&P22 holds 12 rounds as opposed to 10. And I paid $359 for my M&P22 at a gunshow in February which I deemed to be fair in today's market.

IMHO the GSG 1911-22 tactical. About $350 is what I got mine for; comparable to the Sig 1911-22, and takes the same magazines. There are a few upgrades that people suggest, i.e. full length metal guide rod, bushing and plug. I got them from CW Accessories, and the pistol still works great. Only complaint is the sights, they are a bit finicky but other than that love the gun.

Heritage Arms Rough Rider. Those run about $120 or so, plus come with a cylinder for 22 mag.

Also, they're good for shooting venomous snakes that get too close. (Much better plan then torching the snake)
