I have a 17 year old ruger 10/22. Its been a good gun, but it is jamming up more even though I have cleaned it. I take it all the way apart and clean / oil it, but after 30 rounds some time the brass wont eject.

Is this a ammo issue? I know .22 is dirty.
Should I try a new internal bolt? Any other parts I might try replacing?

I just found new 25 round mags at cabellas, so I want to get it cleaned up nice so it can make it through a mag with out jamming.
Any ideas? Just being able to get through a 10 round with out a jam would be nice.

Look carefully at the extractor in the right side of the bolt. Is the point on it sharp, or has it become rounded? If it has become dull, you should replace it. Both Volquartsen and Kidd make hardened, sharp-pointed extractors that work very well and last a long time.

Are you over-oiling where the bolt slides inside the receiver or at the extractor? Too much oil will actually gum up the bolt and cause it to move sluggishly. In fact, there should not be oil up there between the bolt and the receiver.

I may be over-oiling since this started.

+1 on the extractor pin.

I was having the same problems with my 30 yo 10/22 till I replaced the extractor pin. Now she's as good as new. If it is the extractor pin, you can find plenty of instructional videos on the interwebs to walk you through the repair.

I've read good things about Volquartsen. However, I just gave Ruger a call. They sent the replacement parts free to my mailbox in under a week.

Its good to have an extra one or two of these around. While you are at it consider replacing the buffer pin with something like Tuffer Buffer - http://www.tufferbuffer.com/

In addition to being a little easier on the bolt it helped quiet down the mechanical noise of mine as well.

It's almost always the extractor on 10/22s. If not it could be a weak spring. Even at 17yrs old I'd be surprised if that was it tho
