In the early morning hours of March 16th, Charlottesville Police Officer Alex Bruner shot Frank Brown, 56, of Albemarle County.

Bruner and other officers were responding to a call to the Elks Lodge located on Second Street NW, near the Downtown Mall.

Witnesses report that Brown, a CHP holder, had been involved in an altercation with Leon Brock of Culpeper County and and others. Apparently, Brown had been attacked by this group and shot Brock. Brock was convicted on 2010 of a similar crime against a UVA student on Wertland Street.

Bruner was one of the first officers on scene and shot Brown after telling him to drop his weapon.

Brown and Brock are both currently hospitalized from injuries sustained.

How many seconds between the order and the shot? Did the officer shout-and-shoot?

I smell a MAJOR lawsuit brewing.

Not good. I hope there is continuing coverage of this.

Really what's your guys problem with the cop? Let's turn this around. You have your concealed pistol on you and stumble into a room with a wounded person and a guy with a gun. How long do you wait between you say "drop your weapon" and you shoot him? Was your first response, "why would I say anything"?

not a cop but, i would hazard a guess that you continue giving the order until there is compliance, a overt move to threaten (point the gun at you), or backup arrives (rinse, repeat) with more options.

i'm not sure folks are hanging the cop. Early information from news is often sketchy, unvetted, incorrect, and is often opinion rather than fact.

Depends on how that someone is holding the gun. You can't expect the guy to have laid the gun down before the cops arrive if there are still BGs on the scene. If he is holding the gun down at his side and not raising it, I expect a few seconds and a repeat order. I expect the cop to have the discipline not to fire unless the suspect raises the weapon. This incident stinks.

More to it IMO:
A witness told police one man shot another man and as the shooter approached the victim, ready to fire again, an officer intervened.

"The witness further advised that while the man was down, the shooter approached with the gun lowered, as if he was going to fire again," Charlottesville Police Chief Tim Longo stated. "Meanwhile the witness observed the officer arrive on the scene, dismount from a bicycle and move in the direction of the shooter. And while the witness did not actually see the officer fire his weapon, he did report hearing gun shots."

If you are ever obliged to fire in self-defense, what do you do after firing to best prevent having the police mistake you for a dangerous shooter without disarming and placing yourself at risk of a fresh attack by your antagonist?

Sadly if George Zimmerman taught us anything the answer is to pick up your brass and run like hell.

Hmmm...maybe the officer was too winded to shout commands. After all, he probably pedaled that bicycle there as fast as he could and had the blue lights on and everything.

Sometimes crappy things happen. I don't mean to imply the cop is in the right. Just saw a lot of posts that were negative towards the cop. My intent was to show it from the cops "possible" view. Could be a good shot or not. Just hate all this jumping to conclusions until we know all the facts.

For us we're taught the triangle of lethal/deadly force. There's the weapon of choice, opportunity (can they use it), and basically range of the weapon. If this dude has a gun near him, lets say on the ground, but the weapon has the range to harm you and is a deadly weapon, of course you do not shoot because you are in no harm. If a guy has a knife in hand, 20 feet away and starts running at you, you're in good standing to fire.

Just throwing out what I can. No one knows the exact situation except for the officer and the victim so I won't comment on that side. Also, my training doesn't equate PD training either, we all do our thing differently. More than one way to skin a cat kinda deal.
