Youth 10 meter air rifle comps?

Post by Rualert »

OK, I know this is a bit off topic in regard to a firearms board, but with the instructors, and match directors, ect here, I thought this might be a good place to ask. I have a 13 year old daughter who has become quite fond of the shooting sports, and has shown some great potential in the accuracy department while shooting my adult air rifles. She can repeatedly hit a 1" pole staked at 57 yards with one of my quite accurate, and powerful air rifles. So my question is, where are the youth shooting leagues around the Richmond / Chesterfield area? More than willing to drive a bit to get to a range, or event, but will most likely also need to find her a coach that understands how to properly set up a three position 10 meter air rifle for her. So any suggestions? Toss them my way, my daughter will be most happy.
Thanks for any responses, as searching has not found anything close as yet, only out in the Roanoke area so far.

Check with your local 4-H for a shooting club, CMP's website for local clubs, NRA has open air rifle comps. throughout the year, Rivanna Gun Club in Charlottesville would be a good place to check out.

Here are some contacts from a google: http://www.myvssa.org/content/junior-program-contacts

Here is a list of CMP events that you can filter for Virginia:

And the 4-H calendar of events which includes air rifle matches:

That took me 60 seconds. I'm sure there is more info out there.

We started a 4-H Shooting Club in Mechanicsville a few months ago. Is off to a bit of a slow start, as several adults must be 4-H certified before any of the kids can shoot. But I suspect that things will be in full swing within the next couple of months.

If you are interested in starting a 4-H Shooting Club in Chesterfield I suggest sending Jinx Baney (jbaney@vt.edu) an e-main. Jinx is the Coordinator for the Virginia 4-H Shooting Education Program. Jinx can point you in the right direction.

This is very good information, by the way Bob, I had found the VT stuff, but initially had searched for Chesterfield, so it missed the Richmond 4H events. The Mechanicsville area is close enough to at least get started. If I were to consider trying to get a Chesterfield group started, I assume I would need the NRA instructors course for your Air rifle / Pistol to be an official range person. I still would need to find some other people, as I do know how to shoot, and maybe the instructors course also goes over proper setup for the 10 Meter 3 position COF, and gun setups. I simply want to help provide her the option to compete and see where it goes. I do appreciate everyones input, and will take any additional information or pointers. I used to compete in IPSC, and long range pistol, but never any formal target rifle, or serious bulls eye pistol, so I just want to make sure she is taught the proper techniques. Wouldn't want to teach her something that would have to be relearned if I did it incorrectly.

Casey, I think that what you are doing is terrific, and I only wish that most parents were like you. The salvation or extinction of our country depends on how well we teach our children.

Casey,

There is a Chesterfield club, at least there was one about 3 years ago (lost their contact info).

Contact the 4H, VSSA (Mechanicsville) person and they should be able to steer you right.
